I put this in the "local" forum- Its an Avon Lake issue so thats local for me.

Avon Lake is trying to build  rec center and fund it with a city income tax hike (about $80-100 year for the average person who works in Avon Lake for the next 25 years.)  With Avon Lake's Ford Plant, we have strong opposition to it, and it is a Republican mayor who is in favor of it.  Also, my boss State Rep Earl Martin supports it.  Their reasoning is that it will be a place for organized sports to take place, and can be where residents can work out for a reduced cost.  They also argue it will increase property values (if anyone has been to the Avon Lake / Bay Village area, its rather yuppish) and will encourage more community development.

But I oppose it, and proudly have a sign against it in my front yard! I know the Demorats are pushing for it, but something rubs me the wrong way knowing that myself and my family (we all happen to work in Avon Lake) will fund a rec center, when we are already members of a wonderful new jym down the road!

I can see how it can benefit a community, but maybe Avon Lake should stop trying to be a 3 by 7 mile country club and start worrying about its tax payers. Local Republicans aren't too happy with my opposition, and I feel slimey working with Union Democrats who spent some of our meeting Bashing Bush and Earl (even if he supports this tax, his voting record keeps him with the most conservative members of the state house).

The web site for the pro-rec center PAC is here: http://www.avonlakesportscomplex.com

Am I right to oppose this tax hike?

Stand your ground, Matt.

Rec centers are not the business of government.  That said, I confess that M & I use the Worthington center, which is 4 blocks from my house.  But it costs a bare $300 per year, compared to Westerville Athletic Club's $1,000 per year.  And we were members there before moving into Worthingon.  I hate to see governments squeeze out viable businesses.

Yeah you shouldn't be ashamed to use something that you pay taxes for.  I always hated being asked, "why do I attend a public land-grant university if I hate anything thats public?"  My answer is always that its an excellent school, and my parents and myself have more than paid enough in taxes to higher education to fully fund my time at OSU.  Somehow liberals want me to pay for everything, then want me to be ashamed to use what they force me to pay for.

You are right- I'll stand my ground. Its just feels wrong to work with these damn partisan union members from Ford.

Your Republican mayor is a good case in point on why the Republican party can no longer be trusted to represent limited government and lower taxes.

In the campaign I was managing in Carmel, Indiana, the Republican Mayor proudly proclaimed "I've never raised taxes!" but city debt went from $8 million to over $200 million in 8 years.

Democrats tax and spend, Republicans borrow and spend.

It's refreshing to once again be graced by your positive vision for the future, Herr Butler.

Like a recurring nightmare.  I'll leave it at that, as it does not warrant a serious response.

It is true that SOME Republicans borrow and spend...I'm no more happy about it than Mr. Butler.  Yet many in the GOP are faithful, and the goal should be to reward them and punish the backsliders!

As for Libertarians...it is true that they neither tax, nor spend, nor borrow...because they don't WIN elections!
