Yes, its true. I've moved in and out of Columbus since 1983, and I've always heard how its this big up and coming American city. So why is it that if you don't own your own car, your life stops here. In a real city, a car would only slow you down. We all know that driving privately owned vehicles is expensive, dangerours, slow, and inefficient. There really isn't any excuse because I've been to cities in eastern Europe that are way poorer than we are that have fully functional metros, light rails, and a respectable taxi fleet. When will we cease being the little brother of Kansas City and start looking more like Cleveland, Pittsburgh, or Chicago? I suppose never.

nothing is more american than driving by yourself in a large suv to work. public transportation is much too expensive- instead, build more lanes on the freeway.

seriously man, I've never been to this site before, but if you really mean that, well, then you can stay here with your leader, Mayor Mike B.Coleman, and continue to make this place even more of a "Witchita of the east" than it already is, where people are either whtittling on their front porches or talking about Buckeye football as the world passes them by.

And you folks call yourselves Libertarians or Conservatives? Public transit 1) never carries enough passengers to make it pay, and 2) is HEAVILY subsidized -- COTA, for instance, is 75% subsidized. And you want to make it even more of a white elephant by building light rail (which is hideously expensive and severely limits the service area). The only cities that can make light rail work are very dense (like NYC) or have enormous tourist traffic (like D.C.).
Read a little before you support public transit. Damn.

wow, you sure have persuaded me, Dain. I guess having 2,000 people in 1,500 cars on High Street on a Saturday night, who are all basically going to the same two or three places is a good idea, not to mention the dialy carnage on display from auto accidents.

Yes, and being forced into car ownership is a restriction of my freedom to travel around. This is more of a national problem than a local one, so I'll stop scapegoating Columbus. A national rail system (like the ones that exist everywhere else in civilization) is far more efficient than people driving places on thier own, not to mention the jobs it would create instantly. Most U.S. cities have this problem, but this is the worst I"ve seen as far as every man, woman, and child needing to own thier own vehicle to live.

lol here we go.......let's make sure that when there is an emergency (say like a family member who may be at the ER suffering a MI) that bus make's a special trip to get me to Riverside in the typical 10 minutes it would take to get me there. Never mind that if you find something on the way home that is bigger than a bread box it isn't allowed on the bus.
Need I go on??? Ok who let the blond in??? Before you say anything else yes I am blond.

tweet, I'm not disputing that public transit around here is a complete joke. I think if you saw it the way it is intended to be used (Germany is probably the world leader), you might change your mind. I don't really see this as a political issue. Yeah, you could say, "well I don't want to pay taxes for something I won't use", but I could just as easily say, "I don't want to buy a car, but I'm being forced to as a Columbus citizen".

You know, many parts of the world have private transport for hire (like our taxis, only on a larger scale). Why not here? Because there aren't enough people to make it pay (except in places like D.C. and Chicago). It's a matter of record...PT has to be heavily subsidized, and the ridership is low. As for freedom, there's nothing in the Constitution that guarantees the right of mobility. It's a private responsibility unless you can convince enough people to tax themselves to provide it. Fortunately for Columbus, our citizenry have had enough sense not to sink money in lots of ill-advised PT projects. The buses are expensive enough!
And if this distresses you, then move to New York City. They have a wonderful subway system. It's your right.

I was very impressed with DC's metro- If I worked there I'd probably take it everyday. Very comfortable in non-peak hours.
But yes, its far too expensive for Columbus to start.

Look, folks, if you want the skinny on public transit, particularly light rail, check out the link below. Of all public transit, light rail is the most expensive and least flexible.
