OK,

I'm trying to get educated on local politics here, but it's hard.  I can debate global and national politics with confidence, but whenever I try to involve myself in local politics, I find there is enough I don't know to fill a few hard drives(or at least it seems that way).  Whenever I"m downtown, and try to advance a remotely conservative agenda, I'm denounced as a Nazi/Racist/extremist theocrat.  The end result, unfortunately, is apathy and the desire to get the hell out of here.  Can someone please:

*Briefly summarize the political climate here

*explain why conservatives act so timidly around here

When I got here, I caught an "underground" paper in an obvious lie as part of a hit piece against Bush.  Furious, I wrote the editor, and my letters were never published.  I finally recieved an email from someone calling himself "J. Caleb Mozzoco" who explained that his paper did not publish such "radical" views.

Best thing to do is read stuff on here.  We have sorts of stuff.  Go into past topics and see what was hot to talk about.  I used the forums to write a paper against the smoking ban.  Also, read the news paper and watch the news.  And then from there try to find out more about an issue that you think is important.  With as much liberal spin as there is in the media.  There is always two sides to a story.

From what I can put together, it seems they have been quite successful as caricaturing conservatives as anti-gay religious fundamentalists, so much so that few people even question it or are open to hear conservative views.  I was at "Le Tremont" in German Village a few hours ago and a woman purporting to be an ACLU lawyer who was wearing a "Asses of Evil" Bush/Cheney/Rummy button rattled off the issues to me with confidence.  It became clear that people like her are the ones pulling the strings around here.  I proudly displayed my John Birch Society membership card, and quickly found myself being attacked on all fronts.

We needn't  be timid around these people, their arguments are flawed and intellectually lazy.  A good starting point would be un-brainwashing Columbus's massive gay/lesbian population of the belief that the democrats are their party.  I"m working on a new blog to do just this.
