For the past couple of months, I've been going to city coucil meetings in my city (London) and I'm sick and tired of the way its run.  The coucil really dose not listen to people's concerns.  And this just isn't a citizen who just says this.  They really don't.

Example:
Right now the hot-button issue in London is trash pickup.  They are going to charge 7.80 per month for trash pickup, but now you have to buy special bags at $1.00 a piece.  Plus we are getting a recycling program.

Me and other concern citizens went to the meeting and the coucil person from my ward came to us, and said "I wish I didn't vote for the damn thing.  I have to place them bins down at the street.  I can't be doing that during the winter time."  When sombody was asking why she voted for it.  She turned away and walked.

And tonight was the Board of Public utilities meetings and the turn-out was great.  After the meeting, the one person who was on council who voted AGAINST the measure, met with citizens and to gather them to fight and push a petition to get city council to repeal the measure.  There were about 3 other members of coucil present that night and they did not bother to meet with the people.

So, in short, I've decided that I just can't sit around and wait for the "perfect" canidate to come along with the people's interest at heart.  I have to do somthing.  And I've decided that I might run for the city council in my ward (currently held by the only democrate on the council)

What do CTH-ers think of such a move?  Do you think it is wise?  And another thing, what kind of things do you have to go through as far as paper work and what not.  I do know that I have to pay a filing fee and have to file papers with the ethics commission.

Right now, I'm about 80/20 for doing it.  Politics is somthing I've wanted to do for a long time.

I definitely think you should. You're getting involved for the best possible reason, and you're doing it out of concern for the way things are being handled, not out of a desire to grab for power. Of course, I'm probably quite naïve about these things. The power grabbers play dirty games.

I love it!  Someone who is willing to get off their ass and do something!

The first two things you need to do, after searching your soul to make sure you can emotionally handle the public pressure and checking your skin to make sure it's a foot thick, is to hire a campaign manager and start raising money.

A campaign manager should know the process well enough to lead you through it, and the Secretary of State's office has a lot of information for candidates.  You can obtain all the forms here.

Thanks guys for the support. (And G3 for the forms). Right now, I've decided I'm about 90% ready personally.  I just need to get a platform and make my presence known.

thanks guys

That's the spirit, Chairman.  Anyone willing to consider public office for the RIGHT reasons has my complete respect!

I'm mostly committed to family, job, and recently to local politics in my community, but keep me posted.  If I can support in some way, I will hope to do so.

P.S.  This November, a fiscally responsible school board candidate who is not actively supported by the teacher's union or school district (this is HIGHLY unusual!) will be earning a seat on the local school board, uncontested.

It is only one of 5 votes on the board, but it is a surprising sign of necessary change.  YOU may become a similar sign of necessary change in your community.  Good luck in deciding on whether it is something you wish to pursue.  I'm sure you will come to the right conclusion. Wink

Thanks Guys,
As for now I think I'm totally gung-ho for it.  Right now, me and a few other citizens have forms a group called CARBS, Citizens agaisnt refuse bag system.  And I sit on the executive committie. I thank for your input.  Next november is right around the corner so I just have to get everything together and organized.

Thanks guys for the support!
