In a previous thread I started, I mentioned my city (London) was going to a pay-as-you-throw program. We are also going with a curb-side recycling program along with it.
How our program is breaking down is:
We pay a rate of 7.00 a month for trash pick-up. And we have to try and recycle what items we can. What items we cannot recycle we have to throw away of course. The city has decided that we have to buy these special trashbags that cost one dollar.
For example, my family of three throws away about 5 bags of garbage a week. Under the old system we could throw away as many bags as we wanted for 14.00 a month.
Under the new system, lets say we recycle and are able to reduce our trash bags down to 3 bags a week. So, we have to buy these special trash bags at three dollars a piece. Which in the corse of a month, if it stays at this rate of 3 bags, will cost us 12 dollars a month. And add the normal monthly fee, the city will end up getting 19 dollars a month. Which they are making 5 dollars more a month from our family (by adding what they old fee and the cost of bags per week). Over the course of a year, that 5 dollars ends out comming to 60 EXTRA from just our family alone.
So, my question to the CTHallers out their. Does anybody have any statistics on this type of program, if they actually work. Or what other alternatives there might be?
I've been gathering some info off of the internet. We have a meeting tomorrow with people who want to try and get city council to repeal the measure and I sit on the executive committee.
thanks folks!
