There will be a candidates night on Thursday, 10/27 at
Congregation Beth Tikvah 6121 Olentangy River Rd., Worthington, OH

The debates feature the following:

Worthington City Council
Sharon Township Trustees
Worthington Library Tax
Municipal Court Judges
State Issues
Columbus City Council

While the first three are Worthington-specific, the last three would be interesting to all other Franklin County CTHers. It should be a great show.

6:30pm for a meet and greet with the candidates. The formal program starts at 7.

Tonight's candidates night featured a debate between Larry Wolpert and Richard Cordray on the state issues. I imagine they will provide the same show at the Worthington event.

Well.. There were three Worthington specific discussions (Worthington City Council, Sharon Township Trustee, Worthington Library Levy), Two judgeships, 30 minutes on Issues 2-5 and Columbus City Council.

The big issues in Worthington are economic development and the OSU Airport. An additional issue in Sharon Township concerns annexation and land use (truly, all politics are local).

The Worthington Library is asking for a 2.6 mill levy that is designed to last for 14 years. It will allow the library to build up a cash reserve of 15 million dollars. The issues in this levy are twofold. First, the library gets a lot of use from Delaware County residents who contribute nothing to its operation. Essentially, Worthington (Per Capita Income: 68.5K) is being told that in order to continue to have excellent library services, we must also fund library services for Orange Township in Delaware County (Per Capita Income: 75K) and Liberty Township in Delaware County (Per Capita Income: 101K). A second issue concerns the lack of construction for a third library branch that some residents claim were promised 15 years ago. That library would be constructed around 1/2 mile from the Delaware County Border. It is a tricky issue because the Worthington Libraries are first class and their management is the epitomy of how public money should be used. Their expenses have actually gone down in the last 4 years despite a 50% growth in circulation. The right answer is to regionalize library funding, but I'm not holding my breath on that one.

Dan Lacey from OSU and Rep. Wolpert faced off on the issues. By now, we all know the arguments on both sides. These issues will be decided by who does the better job on TV in the next 10 days.

The most interesting part of the evening was when the Democratic City Council Candidates did not even bother to show up. All three of them decided that they had better things to do. Republicans Eddie Pauline and Phil Harmon had the stage to themselves to discuss issues of import to Northwest Columbus.
