'United States planning a military strike against Iran'
The United States government reportedly began coordinating with NATO its plans for a possible military attack against Iran.
The German newspaper Der Tagesspiegel collected various reports from the German media indicating that the North Atlantic Treaty Organization are examining the prospects of such a strike.
According to the report, CIA chief Porter Gus, in his last visit to Turkey on December 12, requested Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan to provide military bases to the United States in 2006 from where they would be able to launch an assault.

I hope so. Better to do it before some of those nasty little mushrooms pop up in formerly populated places.

Yes, Porter "Gus" is going to convince Turkey to provide us the launching point for an attack on Iran. Sure....
I seriously doubt anything "overt" will happen here, although perhaps, just perhaps, some kind of raid by 'unmarked' F-17s on certain select Iranian facilities. Deniability all around, of course.
Still, I doubt it.

Interestingly they were talking about this on Fox News Sunday. Don't know how credible it is, but they all thought Isreal isn't going to wait for NATO. One interesting side note is the Charles K mentioned that his 2006 prediction was for Isreal to attack Iran, and Venesula to hold their oil production from the world markets in protest. This coupled with Russia beginning to flex their muscle in the oil industry is making Oil look more and more interesting as an investment in 2006. Gold should also do well, as would other commodities. The higher oil prices will drive the trade deficit higher, and pressure the US $ lower. That would favor international investments over domestic in 2006. Well there you have it, my 2006 prediction. Oh, the Fed Reserve also has at best 2 more rate hikes of 0.25% each. Rates should stabalize and the long bond rates may actually fall. Both events will also weaken the US $.
Things to watch in 2006:
1. Oil Higher
2. Gold Higher
3. Short rates stable to lower after the Fed's 0.5% rate hikes.
4. Long rate flat to down (10 yr and 30 yr)
5. Republicans maintain control of both houses of Congress
6. International markets will outperform domestic: EAFE and Emerging Markets
7. Watch Japan and Brazil
8. China will remain strong through the olympics
9. Interest sensitive financials will lead the market in 2006.

Scary Thing about Iran's Nuclear Program
Jan 18, 2006
by Chuck Colson
Recently, the leaders of six nations, including the United States and Great Britain, met to discuss Iran’s restarting its nuclear research program. To quote Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Iran’s actions “crossed the threshold.”
What threshold? The threshold between actions that are irritating or worrisome and those that keep you up at night. This is especially true of Iran if you understand the religious—and, I would say, scary—vision that shapes Iranian President Ahmadinejad’s decisions.
Iran’s president is not only a devout Shiite Muslim; he is also what is known as a Mahdaviat. The term means “one who believes in and prepares for the Mahdi.” The Mahdi , also known as the “Twelfth Imam,” is the Shiite equivalent of a messiah: “the restorer of religion and justice who will rule before the end of the world.”

Some people (Libertarians included) may say that Iran has a sovereign right to defend and arm itself to the best of its ability.
I think the Bush administration and NATO has an excellent counter-argument to this.
That countries such as Iran and North Korea are irrational and are in effect "corporate felons".
I think this argument goes a long way and I agree with it 100%.
We wouldn't allow an irrational and insane neighbor to make threats of destroying other neighbors, commit felonies, and to arm himself.
All of the diplomatic venues have been exhausted. I think allowing the Europeans to take the lead on negotiations was the best possible move. The Europeans have really no option but to agree that Iran is uncooperative and argumentative. I think it's all sewn up and ready for a good bombing.
Does anyone know the status of the US supply of J-DAMS?
I know that the Iraq war was held up for a long while waiting for the factory to produce enough J-DAMs for the shock and awe strategy. And for this Iran plan to work, all the dozen nuclear facilities would need to be bombed simultaneously.

Nukes and WMD's change the rules. Having a nutjob like Ahmani Nijad in charge precludes waiting. I guarantee the Israelis won't wait.

FAS on JDAMS
Of course the JDAMS can be equipped with a variety of munitions. And I mean the full scope.

Did anyone notice that Hilliary has been watching one too many episodes of "Commander in Chief". Boy did she yank the moveon.org group with that hawkish speech, we all heard that pro-war undertone.
Yet at the same time just like her business partner william "I did not tell that lie" did she is calling on the UN to do the same dance with Ahmani Nijad just as they did with Saddam. This will bring the price of oil will to that magic $100 per barrel.
You can be guaranteed those Israelis jet's engines are very warm.

If Iran wants nukes so bad, why don't we just drop (off) a few of our extras to, say, every one of their military locations?

Bolton: Bush won't tolerate nuclear Iran
By HERB KEINON
Talkbacks for this article: 12
US President George W. Bush will not accept a nuclear Iran, John Bolton, the US ambassador to the United Nations, said Monday.
Bolton, speaking from New York via video hook-up to the Interdisciplinary Center's Herzliya Conference, said that Bush was determined to pursue the issue through peaceful and diplomatic means, "but has made clear that a nuclear Iran is not acceptable."

Why does everything have to go through the UN and "Peaceful and Diplomatic" means prior to action being taken? Just like with children, you can't rationalize with these people, just like Saddam. We gave him ample notice prior to, and what did he do...let his country get destroyed and it led to plenty of people being killed needlessly (had he taken complied). The Iranian President and its Shah don't give a damn about their people and take the UN as seriously as Conservatives have learned to. It's time for alta matum's (sp?) to be given and lack of compliance will surely be met with grave consequences, not a dozen UN resolutions. The UN is nothing more than a long standing Jimmy Carter administration. Who knows how much money they've sucked out of the world over the past few decades while accomplishing what?
It's time to stop playing politics when you have someone in front of you loading their pistol.

57% Americans support military action in Iran
By Greg Miller, Times Staff Writer
Published: January 27 2006 15:22 | Last updated: January 27 2006 15:22
WASHINGTON — Despite persistent disillusionment with the war in Iraq, a majority of Americans supports taking military action against Iran if that country continues to produce material that can be used to develop nuclear weapons, a Los Angeles Times/Bloomberg poll has found.

I wonder how fleeting this support would be if even more body bags started coming home.
I'm afraid most of my fellow Americans disillusion me...they vex me. Such fickleness when it comes to bread-and-butter issues like defense <_<
