Good job by all.

I think we ought to chip in to get Kent Justice a "thank you" for a superb job last night.  I was thinking a gift card to Cameron Mitchell's or the Lindey group....but your suggestions (and donations) are welcomed.

Justice did a superb job.

The real question is which candidate has the best chance of unseating DeWine and beating Sherrod Brown in the General.

Well, I think it's between Smith and Pierce.  Mitchell kept shooting himself in the foot  by reminding us of his long string of defeats...this doesn't inspire confidence.  The only thing it established in my mind was that he had a lot of experience losing.  I do admire his anti-"free" trade stand however (although you can keep the "fair tax" stuff).

Between the two, I'd say that Smith is "slicker" but that Pierce has the real "fire in the belly."  He also seems to understand that a strictly Libertarian stance on education and income distribution won't due...we have to appeal to a broader audience.  I suspect he's the real deal.

I'd also like to hear Michael Howard opine on GOP shenanigans that may or may not involve David Smith.

Even before Smith's candidacy was put into doubt, I didn't care much for him.  He sounds to much like a politician and didn't really seem to have a strong grounding other than, "I'll get it done."  He was the king of the talking points, but didn't expound upon anything to any extent.

On the other hand, Pierce was more genuine and had more conviction (from my perspective).  I admire the honesty to get up there and say that he could tell you 100% how he was going to vote, but that he had to look at the matter before hand; that's more than Voinovich can say.  I also liked the fact that he brought up the onslaught of new senators like Ensign, Demint and Coburn.

Mitchel seems to be picking up ideas as he goes along to build-up his platform, but all along the way, he's been leaving a trail of losses.  He's right, he has name recognition, but what conatation does he name have when he's been loosing since '98.

I cast my vote against Mitchel when he started on about having "earned" the right to face DeWine.  Likewise for Mitchel when he started sounding like a politician and you couldn't tell how fervent (sp) his beliefs were.  BTW, didn't anyone get the impression of Ross Perot when Smith started to speak?

Great evening! Thanks all the way around:CTH committee for organizing,Kent Justice for a superb moderating job,the candidates for openning themselves up to expressing their views and the 75-80 people that attended for staying seated for what did seem like a long time....2.5 hours. Thanks to Jim Siegle/Columbus Dispatch reporter who attended and did a followup piece in Thursdays Dispatch page C6 Metro section. From the impressive "tickets" to the event to Upper Arlington police "traffic control" on exit....CTH put on a very first class and professional presentation.  "BOO-YAH" !!!!

Kudos to one & all to those involved in Meet the Senate Candidates Night. Afterwards as I moved through the crowd from council chambers to the parking lot I heard nothing except glowing words of praise for an enjoyable evening.

I believe in the end this will be decided between Mr. Pierce & Mr. Smith.

I will agree that Mr. Smith seems to have alot of memorized answers, whereas the responses Mr. Pierce provided sounded more heartfelt.

I as well would like to thank Michael Howard for providing the comic relief of the night.

I loved it- I will be voting for Pierce.

And Peter, when you have the video, I'll give you my ftp info. I would recommend downloading windows media encoder

select the "progressive download" option, then select the "high speed content video" and the 573 kbps option.

it will take a couple hours to process, then it should be ready for upload to my host.

My hats off to Puger, Peter, AdamSmith, Tweet and all the rest.  If DeWine heard anything, he couldn't be comforted.

I'm going for Pierce.   He's the man with the plan.  Col. Mitchel is an honorable man and I admire his service.  I think Bill Pierce has the "Rocky" effect to put the incumbent on his back.

Smith could do well in a State Senate or State House race.  I hope he considers this.

Thank you Columbus Towhall.

I'm glad we have choices; all of your efforts have expanded my knowledge of the potential candidates and the danger of Dewine.  Now, CTH has potential to influence many and should take advantage of this momentum.

Jolly good.

I've been hearing only good things about last night, and it certainly raises the bar for what people should be expecting out of Columbus Townhall. It's time to begin thinking about future events.

For those of you "insiders," a topic has been started in one of our "insiders only" forums to discuss this.

I was involved with an insurgent Senate campaign in 1996. It was to opposed John Warner in Virginia.   He crushed James Miller in the June Primary.

John Warner was running for reelection in Virginia.  In 1994, he had set up a 3rd party campaign to torpedo Ollie North's election effort against Chuck Robb.  He had voted against Judge Bork and just flat out made Conservatives in Virginia sick.

Warner's voting record is reminiscent of DeWine's.  They both are on the Gang.  DeWine IMHO is not as appealing as Warner.  Warner plays the part of Senator well.   DeWine is a bump on a log.

Interestingly Warner beat Mark Warner in the General.  Confusing.  Mark Warner later got himself elected Governor and is a credible opponent to Hillary for the Democrat nomination in 2008.  The race was extremely close.  I did vote for John Warner but did it with a clothespin on my nose.  Dole also became the Republican Candidate who became the closest candidate to lose Virginia since the Goldwater debacle.

Sorry guys, I have to say Smith. Mitchell just seemed to unorganized and Pierce has his own agenda, and I'm fearful he'll let this own agenda take priority in his duties as our Senator.

It was nice seeing everyone so dolled up lastnight.. and everyone did a fantastic job! Hats off to everyone that attended for having the desire to be educated, and to those who worked hard to provide everything for this event! It went off GREAT!!!!

Thanks again to CTH for their efforts, it was a great event and worth the drive from Cincy.  Getting to hear and see the candidates as well as the audience reaction will be of great benefit when BattleGround PAC makes its endorsement.

My first impression, Mitchel seems to believe he is entitled to win based upon previous races. I think that sense of entitlement is what has left the Ohio GOP in the mess it is in.

Pierce and Smith both seem genuine and motivated by a personal drive to make changes for the better. But Pierce seems to be too focused on issues regarding regulations and education whereas as Smith seems to be more broad on issues across the spectrum.

On the issues, they are all prettyy close...but Smtih seems to have the "big picture" vision and a boldness which I think would serve us well.

The good news is we have some strong candidates, let's hope one of them is able to muster the momentum necessary to unseat DeWine.

Thanks again CTH.
