COSI needs an exhibit on Free market Economics, not tax payer funding.
Visit COSI and the reason they are struggling is immediately apparent. The current management team has turned a one time center for learning into an amusement park. They have dumbed down COSI so much that it no longer justifies its name, Center of Science and Industry. Where are the trains, tractors, factory machines, mechanical exhibits, early autos, space exhibits and other science displays that make other similar centers so successful? With Greenfield Village to the North and the Carnegie and Smithsonian Museums to the East there is plenty of inspiration to be found, and yet the current management team seems intent on competing instead for entertainment dollars which are simply better spent elsewhere. If you are looking for fun, King’s Island wins hands down. There is no more justification for taxpayers to fund my admission to COSI then there is for them to fund my admission to the latest blockbuster movie, King’s Island, Cedar Point, a Broadway play at the Ohio Theater or a ski trip to Mad River. The market is sending a clear message to the management team, change the formula. If this management team can’t give the public what they want now when they have to entice people to visit their center, what makes anyone think they will do a better job when they no longer need to worry about poor ticket sales? Poor ticket sales are a huge motivator for change, taxpayer funding simply enables of the current management to maintain their bad habits. What incentive would the current management have to bring in special exhibits and make the center better knowing that the price of admission is free? They get the same funding whether you show up or not, and work is a lot easier if you don’t. The last thing we need to do is apply the same failed model used for our Public Schools to COSI. What COSI really needs is an exhibit about Adam Smith, Free Market Economics and the Capitalistic System so that the management team as well as everyone else can learn what an awful idea tax payer funding really is. If fact if they were to do that, they wouldn’t need the IRS to rob me of my admission, I would eagerly and voluntarily show up with a smile on my face, wallet in my hand and family and friends in tow.

This must be the letter to the editor in the Other Paper that the ex-COSI employee was railing against in last week's issue, huh?

You are right Pete. Did you notice that she didn't really have an arguement againt my position, just that she thought I was a tax-aphobe? Clearly her message was taht my points were valid, so she simply resorted to childish name calling. But then again, what would you expect from a reader of the Other Paper?

Latest Disgrace articles show COSI projects 55% of funding to come from our taxes! 0 to 55% in 1 election seems a bit of a rush toward socialism. Other science museums which get tax subsidies only ask for 20% or less. Why is COSI more needy than their peers?
Snowflake hits the nail on the head with his comparison to the public schools. Attendance is down by 30%, their product is not selling in the market, and they are asking for the same funding methods as the schools -- which also have declining enrollment (as more children go to private schools). their product is failing (try talking to a kid lately?). THe parallels are too scary!

We need to get a letter to the editor of the Dispatch pronto. Today's letter has all of the arts elites saying that this only beneficial. Why? Because each group mentioned would ALSO like to get taxpayer funding for their little causes (the symphony is the one making the most overtures).
I have a couple of questions: Is COSI's books available to the public? I can't find it on their website. Will their books be available if they receive tax support? I can guess the answers but I want to verify. Does anyone know?
We need to nip this in the bud NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I do not see the COSI thing going anywhere but down to defeat.
You are absolutely correct that what is needed there is responsiveness to market demand and not the subsidizing of poor marketing.
The top heavy management payroll and the objectively verifiable poor job the management are doing simply would not past muster in any privately held business and it we should not reward them with our hard earned tax dollars.
Accountability and market driven sales are an anathema to the artsy, elitist types "running" the boring COSI that is not selling.
Time for a wakeup call from reality.
