Columbus' Black Mayor, Safety Director and Chief of Police need to send a very clear and public message to black community now

Police shooting of black male clearly justified

An article in the Columbus Dispatch 11/09/06, headlined "Man dies in struggle with police" sent a surge of rage through me when I read the article.  Written beneath the headline was the commentary: He was shot as he fought for gun of female officer, police say, his family is furious.  It is the community who should be furious and outraged.

The article reports that Larry D. Parks, a 33 year old black male was observed by a female Columbus Police officer fighting with another man in the parking lot of a United Dairy Farmer store located on the far East Side of Columbus at Noe-Bixby and Refugee roads.  The police officer properly intervened and Parks began fighting with her and ultimately end up trying to take the officer's weapon.  Other CPD officer's arrived on the scene and observed Park's attempt to take the female officer's weapon and took him out like they were suppose to.

Parks has a criminal history of 3 convictions, drug trafficking, drug possession and receiving stolen property.  He also has a past confections of resisting arrest.  Park's life choices clearly put him on a collision course with the law enforcement community and his family knew it.  To act outraged at Park's logical self-imposed demise on the part of his family is BS.  Park's family could not stop him, influence him or control him so society had to.  In this instance, society is represented by the police.

It is of the utmost importance for the Columbus community in general and the black community in particular, that the City's key black public officials, in a very public way, address this issue because it is both a known fact and a growing problem with blacks in particular aggressively and frequently, challenging the authority of the police in very threatening ways.  This crap has to stop and the police need strong public support when face with situations like this that we all know is going to be turned into a race issue by some so-called community leaders in the black community.

The message that the Mayor, Safety Director and Chief of Police needs to clearly send to the black community is that if you pull a weapon or attempt to use a weapon against a police officer, you are going to die.  If you don't it will be a factor of it just was not your time to go but, the polices are trained and will do everything that they can to take you out.  Make no mistake about it.  End of story.

Only one word, "wow!" Welcome aboard WTVN, it has been a long time. Be sure to send that to the Dispatch.

It's nice to hear this perspective from someone that isn't inherently viewed as an "outsider;" although I'm sure they'll find a way to paint you as such.

From the posts on your blog, it sounds like have a bit to offer on some of the topics we're currently discussing.

I'm not sure about the formality of this, but I'll second your recommendation.  I've been MIA for a while, but I think I can still second calls for promotion....welcome to the ranks.  Someone with media experience may be quite useful as the Calvary has found itself to be a little rough around the edges when going out in public.

Hi Guys, thanks for the nice responses.  It will take me a minute to learn how to move around your site.  I don't think too many people consider me an outsider.  The problem that some people have with me is that they could not keep me on the outside in spite of their best efforts.

I think that the name "Columbus Townhall" is both sexy and powerful.  In the media game that is a major plus.  My question to the faithful is do you want me to teach you how to live up to your name?

Hey PeekingIn, you are absolutely right.  That's why I felt compelled to publicly take the position that I did.  Even tough the black public officials did not follow my sugggestion, I do think that they encouraged the FOP to do what they did.

Now, in regards to Columbus Townhall getting on the path to glory , First the governing board must accept that you can't be all things to all people, so don't even try.  But, you can make a difference.  To make a difference you must do so politically.  Politics is nothing more than influencing the distribution of limited resources regardless of the arena, public or private.  In the public arena, to be effective you must be able to influence either a lot of votes or a lot of money, if possible, both.   A forum like Townhall has the potential to influence a lot of votes.  The key is to have the powers that be realized that a lot of people respond to your advocay efforts.  So, having said that, the Board needs to remove all information posted on your site that reflects the actual participation of members and guest.  Let perceptions be the driving force of you site visitors.

Next, the Board must arrive at a general mission statement of the group that has specific appeal to diverse specific target groups.  Identify specific community major issues or problems that are systemic in nature and get be potentially resolved with a political solution.  Pick 4 or 5 of these issues that have a broad appeal and are of interest to your targeted base, build a position concensus, establish a specific official position for each of the selected community issues and use these issues to drive your site visitors participation.

There is more that I can share with you but at this time this is enough to get you started.  I would like for you to share your individual perspectives regarding my suggestions.

WTVN:

Welcome to the forum.  I was a real fan of "Power Play". Thanks to you, we only had 65 hours of "The Best Buckeye Coverage" a week instead of 68, but that momentary distraction from the more pressing issues that we have in Columbus, such as what Troy Smith's favorite TV show is, was very welcome.

I also enjoyed your quest for the Columbus City Council.

Your suggestions for the forum are interesting,  but if implemented would result in CTH being something different than it is now. You are suggesting a path where CTH can drive issues and voters, which is fine, but currently, it exists as a forum for an exchange of ideas. These are two fundamentally different missions that are, as you point out, mutually exclusive.

Personally, I prefer the forum as is, but that doesn't preclude starting another site that would do as you suggest.

I don't know who would be working to keep you out of CTH, I for one have been waiting to see you post here.

I personally believe it's difficult for the members of CTH as a whole to be accurately represented by members of any board that none of us really know who sits on there or how they were selected over others. Having regular meetings with a set agenda would be helpfull as well.

Hi Marc, I think a lot of people feel like you but ask yourself this question, what is wrong with sharing your ideas with like-minded people and having something done about the things that you care about.  If the Board followed my suggestion, the only real difference between the forum now and the forum then, the powers that be would be paying attention.

Think about it.
