A few years ago, I worked for a struggling dot-com in Manhattan whose work force was almost uniformly liberal. Given my conservative orientation, I saw little sense in getting involved in workplace political discussions. My silence was interpreted as acquiescence until I could stand it no longer and fessed up. One co-worker, who had served on the committee that hired me, felt betrayed.

"But," he stammered, remembering my resume, "You worked for NPR."

And there are those who say NPR isn't liberal..

Occasionally, I listen to NPR. Some of the segments are enjoyable. One day, as I listened to the program, I found myself laughing. The entire program was devoted to failure. I kid you not. It focused n a female writer's sadness about "another 9/11" in a Central American country. (Now I can't remember it.) Then, a segment about artists in New York City who doggedly pursue their dream in spite of the rejection they receive. I can't remember the other segment but I do remember saying, "Now there was a perfect liberal program. Life sucks so why even try?"

It really should have come as no surprise, but as I was listening to NPR this morning the female announcer must have had a Chris-Matthewsesque thrill running down her leg as she was describing Obama's inauguration and the holders of the lucky 250,000 "golden" tickets.

Willy Wonka never had it so good. If we could just get Obama some Oompa-Loompa's.
