Columbus Monthly Magazine's Person of the Year and cover page photo go to OSU's star quarterback Troy Smith.

We must be doing incredibly well; we must have achieved an unprecedented level of comfort, wealth, and prosperity, that our local magazine's highest annual honor can go to a college football player.

Good job Mr. Smith and congratulations Central Ohio.

Congrats, Troy.  (Last night not withstanding.)

But, in many ways I'm with Counter on this.  I really enjoy football (the 3 hour games, not the wall to wall hype), but I guess I'm continually surprised and amazed by the reality that Ohio State football is more important to more people than virtually anything else in Columbus.

On my deathbed, I won't be reliving the 2003 Miami game, or listing the Buckeye Heisman winners, or wishing I had spent more time, energy and emotion on Ohio State football.  (If asked, I'm fairly sure I might say I wished I had spent less time on it. )

Apparently we have come so far and achieved so much, that our highest priority can now relate to entertainment...in this particular case...football.

P.S.  I know, I'm overlooking Troy's great personal story, and there is some lasting value in that.  Again, congratulations to Troy Smith, last night notwithstanding.

Silver lining in the BUCKEYES defeat.........the loss(humilitating lop-sided display for #1 top rated team)...atleast we won't be treated to endless yammering about should Coach Tressle's salary increase be $1million or $2 million and to justify it on being second highest paid to Nick Saban.Maybe,OSU has already paid him TOO much @ $2.3 million and the contract should be renegotiated DOWN.

Frankly, I'm glad that it's over.  Jesus could come back with the Rapture and he wouldn't get as much press coverage as OSU did this week!

I've had the opportunity to see up close the courting of big-money donors to the OSU athletic program. For instance, the way private plane trips to and from football games with the athletic director and the football coach are used to entice huge donations or better yet, competition among donors for the coveted limited seating available for such a trip.

I suppose it is just disappointing the way money is showered on entertainers. Don't get me wrong, it is a free country, people should be allowed to spend their money on whatever they want. And magazines should be allowed to name person of the year to whomever will generate the most magazine sales.

Maybe I should rephrase my original posting: I suppose it is a shame really that Central Ohio found, that out of all its residents the person most deserving of the Person of the Year status was a football player. You would think that out of all of our inhabitants that there was a life saving doctor out there, or an inventor of a cure for a disease, or a firefighter or a policeman that risked his or her life to save another. I conclude either there was not a better alternative, or football players sell more magazines.

In any case, go Bucks!

Fear not, Counter. Central Ohio has all of these things. The person whose life the policeman or fireman saved knows who should be on the cover. The person with the disease knows who should be on the cover and, I suspect, so does Troy Smith.
