Soldiers Face Neglect, Frustration At Army's Top Medical Facility

By Dana Priest and Anne Hull
Washington Post Staff Writers
Sunday, February 18, 2007; Page A01

Behind the door of Army Spec. Jeremy Duncan's room, part of the wall is torn and hangs in the air, weighted down with black mold. When the wounded combat engineer stands in his shower and looks up, he can see the bathtub on the floor above through a rotted hole. The entire building, constructed between the world wars, often smells like greasy carry-out. Signs of neglect are everywhere: mouse droppings, belly-up cockroaches, stained carpets, cheap mattresses.

Poll: The Politics Of Health Care
Most Americans Favor Universal Health Care, Give Democrats Edge On Improving System
Two-thirds of Americans say providing health insurance for all is a more serious problem than keeping health care costs down.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(CBS) Americans think the U.S. health care system is in need of major repairs, according to a CBS News/New York Times poll.

Nine out of 10 say the system needs at least fundamental changes, including 36 percent who favor a complete overhaul.

Reimportation of Drugs from Canada?

China Investigates Contaminated Toothpaste
By DAVID BARBOZA and WALT BOGDANICH
DANYANG, China, May 21 — Chinese authorities are investigating whether two companies from this coastal region exported tainted toothpaste as more contaminated product, including some made for children, has turned up in Latin America.

A team of government investigators arrived here Sunday afternoon and closed the factory of the Danyang City Success Household Chemical Company, a small building housing about 30 workers in a nearby village, according to villagers and one factory worker. The government also questioned the manager of another toothpaste maker, Goldcredit International Trading, which is in Wuxi, about an hour’s drive southeast of here.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Contaminated pet food is still being sold at some stores, U.S. health officials warned on Thursday after checking hundreds of retail outlets.

The Food and Drug Administration said it had inspected about 400 stores nationwide and still found some dog and cat food products affected by last month's recall by Canada-based pet food maker Menu Foods Income Fund and other manufacturers.

"FDA believes most companies have removed the recalled product; however, some have not," the agency said in a statement.

Michael Moore Mocks Indian Anchor’s Name During On-Air Tirade Against CNN

Filmmaker Michael Moore went off on CNN anchor Wolf Blitzer during an interview Monday to promote his latest documentary 'Sicko'. Moore blasted the anchor and the network for not doing enough to stop the Iraq war and for doing a 'crap' report on his new film. Moore also mocked the pronunciation of chief medical correspondent, Dr. Sanjay Gupta.

'Sicko' Presents False View of Cuba's Health System
Sicko's underlying push is to, in Moore's words, "ignite a fire for free, universal health care," but when this premise is examined, Moore's rosy mythologizing of socialized medicine's achievement in Cuba is crushed. Go to http://www.nationalcenter.org/NPA557_Cuban_Health_Care.html

Health Insurance is Not Health Care
"As the debate over the future of the U.S. health-care system proceeds, it is important that we -- and especially lawmakers who will craft health policy -- understand the very real difference between health care and health insurance. It is vital we realize universal health insurance is not the same as universal health care," says David Hogberg, Ph.D. in the Washington Times... Huckabee: Filmmaker Moore an example of health care problems

By ANDREW DeMILLO
Associated Press Writer

LITTLE ROCK (AP) -- The producer of Michael Moore's documentary on the nation's health-care system, "Sicko," suggests that Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee's criticism of the filmmaker may be motivated more by his need for campaign funds than his concerns for Americans' health.

The former Arkansas governor told reporters in a conference call Wednesday that he hasn't seen and probably won't see Moore's documentary "Sicko," which calls for an overhaul of America's health care system.

"Frankly, Michael Moore is an example of why the health care system costs so much in this country. He clearly is one of the reasons that we have a very expensive system. I know that from my own personal experience," said Huckabee, who lost more than 110 pounds and became an avid runner after he was diagnosed with diabetes.

My gosh--this article is from 1993 and the only thing it focuses on is waiting periods for care.

Health care and health insurance are serious matters.

The United States has the worst health care system in the industrialized world.
Yet we pay twice as much as the countries with the next most expensive system.

I don't know if single payer is the answer. But something has to be done to improve health-care outcomes and lower the cost at the same time.

Global budgets have unquestionably reduced patients' access to lifesaving but expensive care. Compare the United States with Canada. Per capita, the United States has ten times as many magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) units (which use magnetism instead of X-rays) as Canada; three times as many computerized axial tomography (CAT) scanners; three times as many lithotripsy units (to destroy kidney stones and gallstones with sound waves); three times as many open-heart surgery units; and eleven times as many cardiac catheterization units.

According to this list Canada only has 99 hospitals.
http://www.medi-fax.com/hospitals/Canada/directory.aspx

This one says 900+
Use the index and find listings for:
• 900+ hospitals
• more than 2,800 nursing homes and long-term care facilities
http://www.cha.ca/publishing/guide.htm

Some of the extra money spent in the United States goes to doctors, nurses, and other medical professionals, all of whom receive higher compensation than their counterparts north of the border. According to health data collected by the OECD, average income for physicians in the United States in 1996 was nearly twice that for physicians in Canada.[50] Nurses earn at least 50% more in the U.S. than in Canada[citation needed].

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canadian_and_...ystems_compared

The United States spends more on technology than Canada. The study Medical Imaging in Canada, 2004[65] reported that in 2004, Canada had 4.6 MRI scanners per million population while the United States had 19.5 per million. Canada's 10.3 CT scanners per million also ranked behind the United States, which had 29.5 per million.[66] The study did not attempt to assess whether the difference in the number of MRI and CT scanners had any effect on the medical outcomes.[67]

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canadian_and_...ystems_compared

The extra cost of malpractice lawsuits accounts for some of the difference in health spending in the two countries. In Canada the total cost of settlements, legal fees, and insurance comes to $4 per person each year, but in the United States it is $16.[68] Average payouts to American plaintiffs were $265,103, while payouts to Canadian plaintiffs were somewhat higher, averaging $309,417[69]. However, malpractice suits are far more common in the U.S., with 350% more suits filed each year per person.[70] While malpractice costs are significantly higher in the U.S., they make up only a small proportion of total medical spending. The total cost of defending and settling malpractice lawsuits in the U.S. in 2001 was approximately $6.5bn, or 0.46% of total health spending.[71] In the same year in Canada, the total burden of malpractice suits was $237 million, or 0.27% of total health spending.[72]

All the issues you raise are not entirely irrelevant.

How  many MRI machines, CAT scans, cost of litagation, and wages matter as well.

The most relevant issue is health-care: If you're sick does the health-care system make you better or does it kill you?

The system in the United States is more likely to kill you (and it costs you twice is much to boot).

In Canada the surgeons are restricted to a number of surgerys well below their abilities.

Why does it take 4 months for a basic visit in Canada?

Why are Canadians and many other individuals from around the world coming here for what we consider to be the most basic examinations that cannot be found in their home country?

I'm not buying this line of bs your leaving here, besides once again others here at CTH have left you other questions to answer yet you cannot extend the most basic respect you demand of others.

If there is a procedure that is needed to save your life it can be accomplished here in the US whether or not you've insurance. The hospitals have financial guidelines that work in relation to your income so these procedures are available to everyone.

We can always use one of the looney leftistis posting here, it only shows the ignorance they ply as knowledge.
