I also feel some ambivalence toward the Fairness Doctrine. It is too easy to give the APPEARANCE of being "fair and balanced" while still spreading propaganda. Hannity & Colmes is the best example of this that comes to my mind. A handsome, aggressive, liberal-bashing, "conservative" host and a geeky-looking, somewhat timid, moderate liberal (and no insult meant toward Alan Colmes, because there is no way in hell that *I* could do his job with a deck stacked so against me like that!) co-hosting a show gives "fair" representation to both sides, doesn't it? Fox Noise says it does.

Yes, I am concerned that reinstituting the "Fairness Doctrine" under the present political climate and media system could backfire. What has happened is that "news" has deteriorated into whatever makes money, and an educated and informed public be damned. There is no financial incentive to explain complex issues or present "boring" facts, when the public seems to want a political version of the WWF!! Truth and facts vs. lies and attacking the messenger, (which is the M.O. of the Religious Right, the neocons, the Republicans in Congress, the executive branch, and almost all their media pundits) is not "fairness".

Dick Cheney has been on numerous TV interviews telling outright lies, which the hosts allow to pass when they could easily be refuted by simply "rolling the tape" of Cheney saying something that contradicts what he just lied about! Is it laziness, -- or intimidation, -- on the part of the media that they don't call him on his s***? Having Dick Cheney on for ten minutes and then Democrat X on for ten minutes does no good if it all comes down to a "he said, she said" discussion. This is what has so polarized American politics and why the religious extremists, neocons, corporatists, and militarists have gained such power. The saying, "Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but not everyone is entitled to their own facts," is no longer true. Facts have become irrelevant. Truth is whatever Cheney and his enablers say it is.

If you are working all the time just to survive, and trying to raise a family, and exhausted, then you don't really have the luxury of fact-checking. This is how the masses can be deceived. This is also why CLASS is such a bedrock issue. It is the creation and sustaining of a middle class that gives people the time to become the educated and informed electorate needed to participate in democracy.

Sunday i tuned into Meet the Press and theywere saying who was going to be and the tiopics. the roundtabel topics were Imus (no. 1), Gonzalez, and one other I don't recall. So, knowing that e-mail gate broke on Friday I was eager to hear what they said about it. The roundtable part comes on and they are talking Imus, Imus, Imus. the show ends and guess what? No discussion whatsoever of Torturo and the missing illegal RNC e-mails!!! Shocking, I know.
