A good lesson on free speech...say what you want, but we won't pay for it.

Obscenity about Bush forces college paper to make cutbacks

FORT COLLINS - A profane four-word editorial in Friday's Rocky Mountain Collegian, Colorado State University's student newspaper, caused advertisers to pull $30,000 worth of advertising.

The backlash prompted the newsroom to slash student employee pay and other budgets by 10 percent, according to a confidential memo.

The Friday editorial read in large type "Taser this... F-- BUSH," along with a sentence in regular type saying "This column represents the views of the Collegian's editorial board."

The F-word was spelled out in the editorial, and the phrase was printed about twice the size of a normal headline.

In a letter posted on the Collegian's Web site Friday afternoon, Editor-in-Chief J. David McSwane said the editorial was meant to highlight the importance of free speech.

The deeper lesson -- Watch out for Propaganda Tropes

These stupid kids thought freedom of speech is important and extensive.
Other stupid kids think the Media can be considered Liberal.

The owners and the investors control media outlets and, for the most part, they place little in importance in anything other than a big return on their investment.

Oh come on, all this had to do with was some college students who wanted to show they were tough. They hate George Bush and they want the world to know it.  They used their position with the newspaper to cuss at the President of the United States.

I am sure they feel very adult now.  I am sure they are BMOC now. They think it makes up for their inconsequential lives to date.

Of course the paper should not have to worry about being profitable. They should proverbially defecate freely all around themselves and if they have to drive their pathetic little paper in to the ground to take a stand against the evil President of the United States then that is a cost they are prepared to pay. Of course, they don't actually own the paper, and there is nothing really at risk for them, but then it is the principal of the thing...destroying someone else's property is just as good as destroying your own if it advances your cause.

Vive la resistance!
