CATO had a good panel on CSPAN last night on this issue.  We need to be careful of The doctrine of incorporation.  The Bill of Rights was a check against centralized tyranny, not states.  Why else would states enumerate some of the same rights under their own constitutions?

For all those working for state's rights, the doctrine of incorporation invites federal involvement in state issues, i.e. Kelo.  The issue in Chicago should be resolved within the state of Illinois.  While indoctrination may give a short-term victory to the 2nd Amendment following this case, it has been dealing a long-term blow to this issue of state's sovereignty.

Here is the video of the panel mentioned above.  I give it two thumbs up.  I was completely ignorant of the 14th amendment history.  The 14th amendment sought to give protection to US citizens against the tyranny of the states.  I now see the light.

By the way, I met (and had lunch with) Roger Pilon, the moderator of the panel when he came to OSU last fall.  He is both cordial and entertaining and, on top of it, a top-notch scholar.  I was extremely impressed.  Go to the CATO site and read some of his stuff..especially the Leviathan paper.  And better yet, donate to their constitutional studies division.

Sixteen and 17 year olds who are caught with knives should always face prosecution, Gordon Brown has said.

The Prime Minister will convene a high-level summit at 10 Downing Street in a bid to tackle the recent spate of stabbings across the country.

So far this year 31 teenagers have died violently in Britain - half of them after being stabbed.
 
Yet less than one in seven people who are convicted for carrying knives is sent to jail.

The ignorance of others is rationale for restricting one's freedom.

“No reasonable person would dispute that walking into a retail store openly carrying a firearm is highly disruptive conduct which is virtually certain to create a disturbance. This is so because when employees and shoppers in retail stores see a person carrying a lethal weapon, they are likely to be frightened and possibly even panicky. many employees and shoppers are likely to think that the person with the gun is either deranged or about to commit a felony or both. Further, it is almost certain that someone will call the police. And when police respond to a “man with a gun” call, they have no idea what the armed individual’s intentions are. The volatility in such a situation could easily lead to someone being seriously injured or killed.”

Ashtabula County: Judge tells residents to "Arm themselves"

Ashtabula County Common Pleas Judge Alfred Mackey was asked what residents should do to protect themselves and their families with the severe cutback in law enforcement.

"Arm themselves," the judge said. "Be very careful, be vigilant, get in touch with your neighbors, because we're going to have to look after each other."

Ashtabula County gun dealers and firearms instructors tell WKYC their business has really picked up since the Sheriff's Department cutbacks began some months ago.

"That's exactly why they are coming, so that they can protect themselves," says Tracy Williams, a certified firearms instructor in Jefferson. "They don't feel that they are protected. They want to be able to protect themselves."

...Chicago insists a legal weapon permit holder must have a signed affidavit from a firearms instructor affirming that he or she completed a training course, including at least one hour of gun range training. Chicago simultaneously prevents its residents from meeting that criterion in the city they live in. Yes, that’s right: The city demands gun range training to own a gun yet bans gun ranges at the same time. Well, not all gun ranges. The already existing ranges for government employees at the local Postal Service, Federal Reserve (!), and border authority offices are still in business.
