Report: Israel Hit Syria Nuclear Reactor

I don't know if any of you noticed.  Israel conducted an air strike into Syrian Air space about 6 weeks ago.  Where did those WMD go? ........

An Israeli airstrike on Syria last month targeted a partially built nuclear reactor that was years away from completion, the New York Times reported Saturday, citing U.S. and foreign officials.

The report said President Bush's administration had intense discussions with the Israeli government before the strike and U.S. officials were divided over whether it would be premature.

The silence from the Bush Administration over Israel's recent bombing of a site in Syria gets louder by the day. U.S. officials continue to look the other way, even as reports multiply that Israel and U.S. intelligence analysts believe the site was a partly constructed nuclear reactor modeled after a North Korean design.

The weekend was full of reports about these intelligence judgments, first in the U.S. media then picked up by the Israeli press. Israel's former chief of military intelligence, Major General Aharon Zeevi Farkash, called them "logical." That's the term of art people use to confirm things in Israel when they want to get around the military censors.

It's possible our friends from Pyongyang were involved.

If anyone has been following this situation it's been very interesting. For starters the Russians figured out another one of their fine anti-aircraft defenses was probably defeated w/electronics about the size of a garage door opener.

This put the Syrians in a really bad spot because not long after the airstrike they & the Iranians lost people in an botched attempt to attach "some type" of a WMD to a missle of unknown type. I wonder who they receive those from?!?

The Syrians have been trying to beat the war drums to take back the Golan Heights and this would probably be considered a set back of major proportions.  

US feared N Korea-Syria link before Israeli strike

The US had concerns about potential nuclear-related co-operation between North Korea and Syria before recently receiving Israeli intelligence on the issue that Israel reportedly used to justify an air strike inside Syria.

Binyamin Netanyahu, the Israeli opposition leader, on Thursday appeared to confirm reports that Israeli fighter jets had earlier this month launched strikes inside Syria, which US and Israeli media reported were due to concerns that North Korea was helping Syria develop a clandestine nuclear programme.

One senior US official said Washington had for some time possessed intelligence about potential nuclear co-operation between the two countries.

This is cheery.  Why is Damascus still there?

'Dozens Died in Syria-Iran Missile Test'

Proof of cooperation between Iran and Syria in the proliferation and development of weapons of mass destruction was brought to light Monday in Jane's Defence Weekly, which reported that dozens of Iranian engineers and 15 Syrian officers were killed in a July 23 accident in Syria.

According to the report, cited by Channel 10, the joint Syrian-Iranian team was attempting to mount a chemical warhead on a Scud missile when the explosion occurred, spreading lethal chemical agents, including sarin nerve gas.

Reports of the accident were circulated at the time; however, no details were released by the Syrian government, and there were no hints of an Iranian connection.

The report comes on the heels of criticism leveled by the Syrians at the United States, accusing it of spreading "false" claims of Syrian nuclear activity and cooperation with North Korea to excuse an alleged Israeli air incursion over the country this month.

According to globalsecurity.org, Syria is not a signatory of either the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC), - an international agreement banning the production, stockpiling or use of chemical weapons - or the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty (CTBT).

Syria began developing chemical weapons in 1973, just before the Yom Kipper War. Globalsecurity.org cites the country as having one of the most advanced chemical weapons programs in the Middle East.

 

IAEA Unaware of 'Undeclared Nuclear Facility' in Syria

The UN nuclear watchdog said Monday it had no information about any "undeclared nuclear facility in Syria" and it was investigating media reports that such a site had been the target of a recent Israeli air strike.

The International Atomic Energy Agency "has no information about any undeclared nuclear facility in Syria and no information about recent reports," spokeswoman Melissa Fleming said.

"We would obviously investigate any relevant information coming our way. The IAEA Secretariat expects any country having information about nuclear-related activities in another country to provide that information to the IAEA."

The IAEA was "in contact with the Syrian authorities to verify the authenticity of these reports," Fleming added.

According to The New York Times, Israel bombed a site in Syria last month that Israeli and US intelligence believe was a partly built nuclear reactor possibly modeled after one in North Korea.

Citing unnamed US and foreign officials with access to the intelligence reports, the report said it appeared Israel carried out the September 6 raid to demonstrate its determination to snuff out even a nascent nuclear project in a neighboring state.

Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad has said only that the target was an "unused military building" and that the bombs hit "nothing of consequence."

The newspaper quoted a US official as saying that there was little doubt within the administration of President George W. Bush that a nuclear facility was indeed being built.

"There wasn't a lot of debate about the evidence," the paper quoted a US official as saying of the discussions between the US and Israel.

"There was a lot of debate about how to respond to it."

A high-ranking Syrian official confirmed that Israel's airstrike last month in northern Syria hit a nuclear facility, according to a document obtained Wednesday by FOX News.

"Israel was the fourth-largest exporter of weapons of mass destruction and a violator of other nations' airspace, and it had taken action against nuclear facilities, including the 6 July attack in Syria," Syrian representative Bassam Darwish is quoted in the document as saying.

Diplomats familiar with the document cannot explain why July 6 was invoked, instead of Sept. 6, the date both countries say an incident occurred. A State Department source tells FOX News the best explanation is that Darwish misspoke.
The document, released by the General Assembly's Department of Public Information, recounted Tuesday's proceedings at the annual gathering of the U.N.'s Disarmament and International Security Committee.

What is clear is that this is the first time Syria has acknowledged its nuclear efforts.
One U.S. delegate told colleagues he could not believe his ears when the Syrian diplomat made his statement and that the resulting document was close to verbatim, and another source told FOX News the document reinforces what people heard [the Syrian representative] say in the actual debate.
Syria already has disowned the remarks, adding "such facilities do not exist in Syria."

The state-run Syrian Arab News Agency, SANA, quoting an unnamed Foreign Ministry source, said the U.N. press release misquoted the diplomat and that Syria had made it clear that there are no such facilities in Syria. Syrian President Bashar Assad said earlier this month that the target is an "unused military building."
 

UN Nuclear Watchdog Calls for Information on Alleged Syrian Nuclear Reactor

The United Nations nuclear agency says it has no information to support a recent media report of an undeclared nuclear facility in Syria.

A spokeswoman, Melissa Fleming, for the International Atomic Energy Agency says her agency would investigate any relevant information on the subject. She said the IAEA expects any country with information about nuclear-related activity of another country to provide that information to the IAEA.

The New York Times newspaper reported Sunday that an Israeli air strike on Syria last month targeted a partially built nuclear reactor.

The article, which cited unidentified U.S. and foreign officials, said the nuclear reactor was modeled on one North Korea used for stockpiling nuclear fuel.

U.S. officials said the site was identified by satellite photographs earlier this year.

The IAEA says it is in contact with Syrian authorities to verify the authenticity of the report.

 

What happened in Syria?

there is at least some significant evidence for direct North Korean transfer of fissile material — perhaps even a nuclear warhead — to Syria and/or Iran. That, of course, would constitute the most serious possible violation of the six-party agreement, and would be a grave threat to the security of the United States and the world.

Powerline picked this up.  I don't think this issue is going away.  North Korea involvement in Iran and Syria.  Who'd of thunk it.

Raid Revelation

If people had known how close we came to World War III that day there would have been mass panic. That is how a very senior British ministerial source recently characterized Israel’s September raid on what was apparently a Syrian nuclear installation. Whether matters were quite that grave is an open question. Yet it does seem clear that the full story of the Israeli raid has not been told, nor its full significance recognized. Now two key members of Congress have raised an alarm about this event, thereby throwing our nuclear agreement with North Korea into question.

Ten weeks have passed since the Israel Air Force attacked in Syria, and there is still no reliable information about the precise target that was destroyed, or about the importance and necessity of the attack. Since Israel keeps maintaining its veil of secrecy, Everything that is known comes from leaks by anonymous U.S. administration officials to several of the major American media outlets. What is almost certain, judging from the leaks, are the following facts: A nuclear site built by the Syrians was attacked, and there was some connection to know-how and technology transferred from North Korea. The prevailing assumption is that it was a 5-megawatt nuclear reactor that was in stages of construction, that would have enabled Syria to produce plutonium to manufacture a nuclear bomb.

This assumption relies first and foremost on an analysis by scholar David Albright, director of the Institute for Science and International Security in Washington (ISIS). Albright was part of the United Nations supervisory unit in Iraq that searched for weapons of mass destruction. In recent years, he and his institute have gained a reputation as experts in nuclear proliferation. He is considered close to the U.S. intelligence communit and to have connections with the Israeli defense establishment.

A month ago Albright, as well as The Washington Post and The New York Times, published satellite photos of the site attacked in Syria. The photos were taken on August 10, 2007 and reveal a structure built adjacent to a hilly slope, not far from the Euphrates River. Incidentally, it would be interesting to learn who knew already then, about a month before the attack to take photographs of the Syrian structure from the satellite company DigitalGlobe.

[Israeli nuclear expert: Syria site was facility for assembling nukes]

The Israel Air Force hit a Syrian radar post near the country's northern border with Turkey on September 6, knocking out Syria's entire radar system as a prelude to striking a suspected nuclear reactor, Aviation Week & Space Technology is reporting in its November 26 edition.

The radar site was hit with a combination of electronic attack and precision bombs to allow the IAF to enter and exit Syrian airspace unobserved, the report said.

Subsequently all of Syria's air-defense radar system went off the air for a period of time that encompassed the raid, U.S. intelligence analysts told Aviation Week
 
According to the report, the United States provided Israel with information about Syrian air defenses as Israel carried out the strike.

The U.S. was monitoring the electronic emissions coming from Syria during the air strike, and while there was no active American engagement in the operation, there was advice provided, military and aerospace industry officials told the magazine.

However, there was "no U.S. active engagement other than consulting on potential target vulnerabilities," a U.S. electronic warfare specialist says.

Syria has confirmed the air strike, but has vehemently denied reports that it targeted and destroyed an apparent nuclear facility built with North Korean assistance. North Korea has also denied any nuclear cooperation with Syria.

For their part, Israeli officials have maintained silence and refused to comment on the air strike.

Tel Aviv University Professor Uzi Even, a former Meretz MK and a chemist who until 1968 worked at the Dimona nuclear reactor, told Haaretz in an interview published Thursday that he believes the evidence suggests that the Syrian site was not in fact a nuclear reactor - but rather a facility for assembling nuclear bombs.

Even, who has been keeping track of nuclear issues for years, bases his analysis in large part on satellite photos widely published recently in the media and on internet Web sites.

The images show that the facility lacked a chimney - which is necessary for the emission of the radioactive gases - despite the fact that evidence suggests that construction began on the facility at least four years ago. In contrast, a chimney is clearly visible in images of the reactor in Yongbyon, North Korea.

Israel Targeted Bombmaking Facility in Syria

A Syrian site that Israeli aircraft bombed on Sept. 6 was most likely a plant for assembling a nuclear bomb, an Israeli nuclear expert said Thursday, challenging other analysts' conclusions that it housed a North Korean-style nuclear reactor.

Tel Aviv University chemistry professor Uzi Even, who worked in the past at Israel's Dimona nuclear reactor, said satellite pictures of the site taken before the Israeli strike showed no sign of the cooling towers and chimneys characteristic of reactors.

The absence of telltale features of a reactor convinced him the building must have housed something else, he said. And a rush by the Syrians after the attack to bury the site under tons of soil suggests that the facility was a bomb-assembly plant, which might have been leaking lethal doses of radiation after the Israeli attack.

Israel has maintained an almost total official silence over the strike, which Syria said hit an unused military installation. But foreign media reports, some quoting unidentified U.S. officials, have said the strike hit a nuclear facility linked to North Korea.

Damascus denies it has an undeclared nuclear program, and North Korea has said it was not involved in any Syrian nuclear project.

Last month, American analyst David Albright, president of the Institute for Science and International Security, said commercial satellite images taken before and after the Israeli raid supported suspicions that the target was indeed a reactor and that the site was given a hasty cleanup by the Syrians to remove incriminating evidence.

Albright saw a clue in the fact that the structure was roofed at an early stage in its construction.

"From what we understand, North Korea builds reactors in an old-fashioned way; the roof goes on early." he said at the time.

I looked over this thread and it occurred to me that something is seriously missing from this unprovoked Israeli bombing of Syria(?)  

Namely, a fierce condemnation from Syria or its leaders, or Iran, or any other arab nation(?)  Not even the United Nations, which would normally have a fairly strong opinion on something like this, has even expressed any great interest(?)

Now, I am guessing that if the Isarelis had accidentally bombed a hospital, a school, a mosque, or a marketplace full of civilians, there would have been some serious words, and pictures, of all the needless destruction and the innocent victims.  

Heck, there should have been serious consternation if Israel had bombed a Syrian landfill and injured two or three camels!?!?!  "Death to Israel"  "Death to the Infidels".  (I don't even think anyone tried to curse the United States??)

Did I miss all of that??? :huh:

Or was there none?  Syria just quickly and quietly covers the bombed site over with sand and goes on about its merry way, as if nothing has happened???  (You don't suppose they are hiding something do you? )

And the media...no journalists hanging around to talk to witnesses, victims, and angry Syrians.  No real interest in what caused this, what happened, what happens next.  No search for the TRUTH.  Nothing.

In short, I find that the silence is deafening.

Is it just me??  HELLO!?!?...ANYONE!?!?.......BUELLER??.................Bueller.....................Bueller................
