Protesters want guns on campus
Students at OSU, other schools wear empty holsters to denounce law

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

It's what Evan Peck didn't carry around the Ohio State campus that he wanted people to notice yesterday.

Peck, 21, walked to his classes wearing an empty gun holster on his waist.

"You can carry (a gun) in several places, but Ohio prohibits you from carrying at a university or college," said Peck, a senior majoring in math and sociology.

"But this campus is the one place where I spend the most of my time, and I should be able to protect myself."

This week, students across the country -- including about 15 members of the OSU pistol club -- are wearing empty holsters to spark conversations about concealed-carry rules.

About a dozen students protested at Miami University and the University of Cincinnati.

About 5,000 people are expected to have joined the protest by the end of the week, said Michael Flitcraft, a 23-year-old sophomore at the University of Cincinnati and a protest organizer.

The national group, Students for Concealed Carry on Campus, used the social-networking tool Facebook to seek support.

Yesterday, the group listed more than 6,000 members. Its Facebook site says that students can't stop school shootings but that they should have the right to defend themselves.

Like others, Peck said he has a concealed-carry permit.

If they can't take them from your hands, the goal is to drive up the price, or outspend the gun store business owner. It works.

Larry Pratt of Gun Owners of America told WND that as recently as 15 or 20 years ago, there were 250,000 licensed gun dealers in the United States. The federal government confirms there are only about 108,000 now.

"We have documented our experiences in hopes of showing what the ATF is doing to legitimate businesses and how they disregard our senators and congressman," Horsley said. " I try not to take it personal and have found solace in my faith but it is still difficult when this agency has made every attempt to destroy what your family worked so hard to build, what is even more concerning is how the ATF is single handedly destroying our 2nd Amendment."

In 2001, "they couldn't find any violations," he told WND. A few other minor problems were found later, including a failure to put up a poster.

"I wasn't alarmed because this agent … had told us we were one of the best small gun shops he'd ever seen," Horsley told WND.

Then early in 2006, "We get a letter that 'We're [ATF] revoking your license,'" Horsley said. "I just came unglued. I couldn't believe it."

After an expensive appeal process within ATF, he ended up with the same result, and sought out a lawyer for the federal court challenge, a challenge which now is pending.

College ousts Marine for legally concealed gun

"I believe the Monmouth Police Department issued the citation in good faith and that there was an arguable violation,"  (District Attorney) Butterfield wrote in an e-mail obtained by KATU. "However, a careful reading of the statute and the facts led me to conclude the charge was not in the best interest of justice."

Nonetheless, a Western Oregon University student disciplinary panel has determined that Maxwell may not re-enroll at the college until a mental health professional determines that he is not a threat to himself or the public. The panel consisted of four unnamed students and one university staff member. Maxwell asked for a public hearing, but his request was denied.

"These were children on the panel who were judging him," Starrett said. "These people were in elementary school when Jeff was serving his country in the Marine Corps. I looked at these kids thinking, these kids are judging this guy?"

As soon as the hearing was over, the panel closed and locked the doors, he said. Suddenly, nearly 50 people standing outside heard a burst of laughter coming from the room. "We were like, 'What the hell is going on in there?'" Starrett said. "I've never seen anything like it."

The panel also demanded that Maxwell submit a 10-page essay on the importance of following the law, accepting responsibility for his actions and recognizing the impact of possessing weapons on a college campus before he will be allowed to return next spring.
