NEW CASTLE - The Garfield County All Hazards Response Team broke down Tom Shiflett's door Friday night and, following a court order, took his son, Jon, for medical treatment.

His spouse, Tina, and his six of 10 kids who are still at home were shocked at the manner of entry. Tina said law enforcement, wearing masks, broke down their door with a battering ram and pointed guns in her children's faces.

"They didn't need to bash into my home and slam my kids to the floor," Tina said, adding later, "I think they get a kick out of this."

She said law enforcement threatened criminal charges should the family even try to follow Jon or find out where he was taken. Jon was returned hours later, around 2:30 a.m. Saturday.

Shiflett says his privacy and his rights were invaded, and that he has the right and the skill to treat his son himself. Shiflett, 62, said he served as a medic in Vietnam during the Tet Offensive.

According to a copy of Jon's patient aftercare instructions, a physician recommended Jon drink fluids, take Tylenol, use ice and keep his cuts from his injury clean. Jon still had a nasty-looking black eye and visible bruising on his face Monday after having been hurt in a fall on Thursday.

Jon injured himself by grabbing onto the handle of a moving car his sister was driving and falling. Shiflett and his family said Shiflett ran down the street, checked Jon for injuries and brought him back into their home, where they prayed, applied ice to his head and monitored his condition.

Friday morning, caseworkers from the Garfield County Department of Social Services arrived. Shiflett allowed them to look at Jon briefly but refused to allow them to take his son for treatment or medical evaluation.

Someone - possibly a neighbor - called paramedics. Shiflett said paramedics looked at Jon after coming through an open front door uninvited. Shiflett told them he didn't want them to treat Jon and asked them to leave.

The responder wrote that paramedics left the residence for fear of their safety after Tom Shiflett refused to let them treat his son and became "verbally abusive" to the ambulance crew.

But Ross Talbott, who owns the Apple Tree Mobile Home Park and rents to Shiflett, said he was there when paramedics responded, and that Shiflett was not yelling or acting abusive. He only asked them to leave, Talbott said, and paramedics were in fact acting belligerent. Shiflett says authorities had no right to enter his home uninvited and without announcing they had a warrant.

"I've been (Garfield County Sheriff Lou Vallario's) longtime supporter, but I tell you what, to send a SWAT team down there was just absolutely over the hill," he said. "Inappropriate is not nearly strong enough a word. It was gross irresponsibility and stupidity. ... Is this Russia? I don't know what we're coming to when they think your kid needs medical help and they send a SWAT team."

"When American law allows federal and state agencies to come in a home and confiscate family, there is something wrong with our system," Shiflett said. "If I can find a law firm or lawyer that can take this pro bono, because I have no money, I'm going to sue everyone on that warrant."

"I would have let them in," he said. "It was traumatic to my children, and it's unnecessary."

Homeland Security budgets allow for the spending of a lot of money on high-tech weapons, camo-gear, black-ops vehicles, and training. The SWAT teams then sit around with nothing to do and nowhere to go.

They get kind of itchy after awhile.
A guy has to scratch every so often doesn't he?
We gave the government all this power: Why are we surprised they decide to use it?

You're right. Silly me. He deserved it. Any time we fund law enforcement we should expect to be raided by jack-booted thugs.

Is that what you're saying? Your response illustrates the prevailing attitude in this country. That of cynicism over common sense.

I'd like to see the evidence that substantiated the issuing of the warrant.  It's difficult to comprehend the extent of the injuries, but a parent has the right to choose how they are going to treat their children.  While if I saw some kid from my window getting dragged by a car, I'd be concerned, but you would think that neighbors know each other well enough to know whether or not there is a need to call authorities.  So you're left to wonder whether this is something that hasn't happened before with this family or is the neighbor intruding into family matters.

One Dead, Infant loses finger

Sunday,  January 6, 2008 10:33 PM
Associated Press
LIMA, Ohio

Officers knew there might be youngsters inside a home where a SWAT officer shot and killed a woman and injured her 1-year-old son during a drug raid, Police Chief Greg Garlock said Saturday.
The raid was conducted Friday night to serve a high-risk search warrant that targeted a man charged with a drug crime who lived at the northwest Ohio home, police said. It concluded a long-term investigation into the sale of illegal drugs out of the home, the chief said.

"Because of the fact there were toys on the outside of the residence they were concerned about the fact there could be children inside and they were taking every precaution when they made entry," Garlock said.

"The decision made tried to take all precautions into account and I would have to say obviously our track record has been very consistent in terms of safety," he said.

Killed was Tarika Wilson, 26, of Lima. Family members identified her son as Sincere Wilson, according to The Lima News. He was flown to Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus, where he was in stable condition, police said.

Police arrested Wilson's boyfriend, Anthony Terry, 31, on a charge of suspicion of possession of crack cocaine, and crack and marijuana were found in the home, police said.

The hospital refused to release any information on the injured boy Saturday. His aunt, Tania Wilson, said he had surgery and had been he was shot in the shoulder and hand, with a bullet blowing off a finger.

That's a sad house to grow up in.  At least this way, the child's home situation may change.

My point is:
We have to fund law enforcement.
We should not over fund law enforcement.

I believe in overwhelming military response when we are attacked.
I don't believe in overwhelming police response for every infraction of the law.

I want the policeman to be safe.
But do women and children have to be caught in the crossfire.

They say Koresh was an evil-doer, but maybe the sheriff could have picked him up while he was at the dentist instead of storming the property where there were women and children.

In general, I think it is a bad idea for the police to be breaking down citizens' doors in order to enforce medical treatment. (Blame it on the court if that is where the blame belongs.)

The entire situation w/Koresh was criminal from the law enforcement side. The Clintons made sure Janet "Hillary's Husband" Reno never let a legitimate investigation take place. Our active military & law enforcement used combustive tear gas they knew would cause a fire in hopes of smoking those poor individuals out.

I hate to draw the line of comparison however, the incident's of David Koresh & Randy Weaver at Ruby Ridge are literally mirrored. Don't worry not only do these people want your guns, it's your religion their afraid of just as the Romans were afraid of Christianity.

Our law enforcement has been given these tools from the crys of "we're out gunned and we don't know what's going on". The primary reason our police depts don't know what's going on is our mayors are diverting money from the most basic of past police operations to further their own agendas.

Granted Lima is a hard a** place to be; unfortunately once again the city police dept runs unchecked and people will call the sheriff's office for help before calling the city police. There will probably be a Dept. Of Justice investigation after this incident.

During the attack, she wrote, "One (officer) grabbed my daughter Beth (18 years), who also had a gun to her face, slammed her down and kneed her in the back and held her in that position… My sons Adam (14) and Noah (only 7) lay down willingly, yet they were still forced to put their hands behind their backs and were yelled at to keep their heads down.

"My daughter Jeanette was coming out from the back bedroom when she was grabbed, drug down the hallway, across a couch and slammed to the ground," she said. "The officers then began throwing scissors and screwdrivers across the room (out of our reach, I suppose) and going through our cupboards.

"I asked if I could make a phone call and was told, 'no.' My daughter asked if that wasn't one of our rights. The reply was made, 'That's only in the movies,'" she told WND.
