Schwarzenegger calls for 'rebranding' GOP

Carla Marinucci, Chronicle Political Writer

California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger created shock and awe in the Republican Party when he warned years ago that the GOP was in danger of "dying at the box office" by failing to make the sale to a wide swath of voters.

And with the presidential election looming, the Republican governor of the nation's most populous state - a decidedly blue state - has now found a chorus of agreement. The Republican "brand" - thanks to an unpopular president, a war, gas prices, foreclosures and deficit - has become such damaged goods that GOP Rep. Tom Davis of Virginia groused last week that "if we were dog food, they would take us off the shelf."

The answer for GOP presidential candidate John McCain: take a page out of the Schwarzenegger playbook and sell a product that is "counter" to the current GOP brand on issues like global warming, spending and even immigration reform.

McCain comes to the Golden State this week on a campaign and fundraising swing, including a rally Thursday in Stockton being publicized with an invitation graced by a picture of a McCain hug - not with President Bush but with Schwarzenegger.

And the governor, in an interview with The Chronicle last week, had some candid advice and observations, not only about the GOP brand - but on McCain's efforts to expand his appeal to independents and disillusioned Democrats.

"The Republican idea is a great idea, but we can't go and get stuck with just the right wing," Schwarzenegger said. "Let's let the party come all the way to the center. Let those people be heard as much as the right. Let it be the big tent we've talked about.

RINOs' goal: a greener GOP

There are RINOs (Republicans In Name Only) and then there are RINOs who call themselves Republicans for Environmental Protection. Founded in 1995, REP seeks to save the planet through decidedly un-Republican, big-government socialism. It also annually hands out its "Greenest Republican in Congress" award. This year's co-winner is Rep. Christopher Shays, RINO-4th District, who by sheer coincidence is on REP's "Honorary Board of Distinguished Republicans," along with co-winner Sen. Susan Collins, RINO-Maine. On REP's 0-100 scorecard, Rep. Shays scored 103 for promoting policies that are responsible for today's record energy prices and much more. Out of the other side of his mouth, of course, Rep. Shays whines about high gasoline prices so people think he cares about their energy miseries when he really doesn't.

Rep. Shays and REP go way back. In 1996, he was its first legislator of the year, an award later won by then-Rep. Nancy Johnson for her role in helping liberal environmental extremists choke off domestic oil and natural-gas supplies from which Americans really would benefit today. Connecticut's Rob Simmons was the first REP RINO elected to Congress, and REP's Web site shamelessly declares, "We're proud that all three ... are dues-paying REP members and members of REP's Honorary Board."

REP says it exists to counter assertions that "no 'real Republican' wants to protect the environment or believes in conservation" and that real Republicans think "regulatory reform and property rights are more vital than laws to prevent the extinction of species."

This argument is too flimsy and lazy to call a straw man. "Real Republicans" favor environmental protection and conservation, and support many of REP's goals. Where they and REP diverge is on the tradeoffs and remedies that extremists champion. To achieve what REP wants in the authoritarian manner it proposes would require a massively expensive, despotic government that routinely would trample personal and economic freedoms.

In McCain's mind, however, losing the presidency will not be the final chapter of his life story. He knows the path to "Big Media" redemption. Working with the man who vanquished him in November will show them all the real McCain again.

Remember, it was this onetime prisoner of war who led the charge to open diplomatic relations with Vietnam. If that past is prologue, and McCain's legislative record is any guide, he will not just join with Obama but lead the charge in Congress on global warming, immigration "reform," the closing of Guantanamo, federal funding for embryonic-stem-cell research, and importation of prescription drugs.

But McCain won't stop there in his effort to rehabilitate himself in the media's - or maybe his own - eyes. He will forge common ground on a long list of initiatives that go far beyond where he has gone before, including the stimulus package.

McCain Now Obama's No. 1 Senate Ally

GOP Sen. John McCain is positioning himself to be one of President Barack Obama’s strongest supporters, effectively giving Democrats the votes they need to override any GOP attempt to block the new administration’s legislative agenda.

Insiders duly noted McCain was granted a prime spot on the dais at the inauguration, sandwiched in a seat between White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel and Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

There have been signs of late that McCain has returned to the maverick inclinations that have long antagonized some conservatives. During the hearings to confirm Hillary Clinton as secretary of state, McCain chided his fellow Republicans for dragging things out.

"I remind all my colleagues: We had an election. I think the message the American people are sending us now is they want us to work together, and get to work," he lectured.

Yes..I noticed the McCain "maverick" manuvering, triangulating. He makes me sick and I can't stand to look at him or hear him or anything. I hope the good conservatives of Arizona run JD Hayward in the Republican primary or a Democrat beats him in the general in 2010...sending the little man into retirement! He and his RINO cohorts have just about killed the Republican Party.

Tony,
Actually both did - the Rat & the Rino.  As well as the two who occupy the Senate chairs for the Old Dominion.

Rinovich couldn't vote for Bolton but he votes to put a tax cheat at Treasury.

Even Bob Byrd and Tom Harken voted against this guy.

You guys got to put Portman in the Senate.

Pawlenty wants Minnesota to test mileage tax
by Tim Nelson, Minnesota Public Radio

State officials say Minnesota is working on a pilot program to test the idea of charging drivers for each mile they drive. Other states around the country are considering a vehicle mileage tax, as revenues from the gas tax are expected to decline.

St. Paul, Minn. — The cost of each gallon of gas includes 18.4 cents to fund federal highway programs, and another 25.5 cents for roads in Minnesota.

But as cars and trucks get better mileage, the gas tax isn't keeping pace with the need for roads and road work. So another option is gaining traction in Minnesota -- a high-tech mileage-based user fee.

"We realize that in the future, cars aren't going to be powered by fuel, probably," said Gov. Tim Pawlenty, who signed into law $5 million for the current biennium to study the mileage tax.

Pawlenty said the state is now working on a pilot program to try it out, with an eye toward cars that aren't even on the road yet.

This guy says Glenn Beck markets on fear....and yet this a** hat believes in AGW and was one of the politicians on that multi-million dollar junket (vacation) to "study" global warming.

GOP Congressman Booed for Telling People to Turn Off Glenn Beck
By Noel Sheppard

The media would like folks to believe that only Democrats are hearing it from constituents at town hall meetings this August, but given what happened to Rep. Bob Inglis (R-SC) Thursday evening, nothing could be further from the truth.

As he spoke to a group of 350 citizens at the Upstate Family Resource Center in Boiling Springs, he asked an outspoken attendee why she was afraid of Barack Obama.

Someone in the crowd suggested the Congressman watch Glenn Beck. Inglis replied, "Turn that television off when he comes on."

This was not well-received by folks who started loudly booing their Representative as many stood up and left the building.

Inglis tried to stop the bleeding by saying the following (video embedded below the fold):
Story Continues Below Ad ↓

Let me tell you why. You want to know why? Because he's trading on fear. And you know what? Here's what I think: I think if you trade on fear, what you're doing is, you're not leading, you're just following fearful people.

Joe Wilson, Call Your Office

By Larry Thornberry on 11.6.09 @ 6:08AM

TAMPA-- Bill Buckley used to tell a funny story about a heroic attempt to survive a faux pas. A young lieutenant is obliged to attend a social event in a prominent hotel with a general. In the lobby, in an attempt to make conversation, the lieutenant says, "Look there, that's the ugliest woman I've ever seen," nodding toward two women in conversation on the other side of the lobby.

"That's my wife," the general said. In an attempt to recover, the lieutenant says, "Oh, I meant the young woman with her." The general says, "That's my daughter."

The lieutenant, who knows he's in deep yogurt now, thinks desperately for a second, finally smiles, looks directly at the general and says, "I never said it."

Charlie Crist, Florida's RINO governor who badly wants to be a RINO U.S. Senator from Florida, is trying to run this same revisionist scam. He claimed on CNN Wednesday that he never supported President Obama's $787 billion "stimulus" slush fund, which he clearly did, on tape, over and over. He's caught so much flak from conservatives for this, and for other un-conservatives acts, that in sheer desperation he's trying to get Florida voters to believe he "never said it."

US Sen. Lindsey Graham censured by SC county GOP

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - Republican leaders in a South Carolina county have censured their own U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham for working with Democrats on a climate bill and other legislation.

The Republican has often worked with Democrats in Congress, but Charleston County Chairwoman Lin Bennett says his work on climate legislation is the last straw.

The party resolution passed Monday says Graham has weakened the Republican brand. Bennett expects a similar resolution to be introduced at the state GOP convention next year.

Arizona Republican Sen. John McCain has undergone a transformation on significant issues since the failure of his presidential campaign, particularly since he has faced a challenge from a conservative rival in his Senate re-election campaign.
