Underscoring the impotence of the GOP as they procede forward on their political "death march" is a piece by Dick Morris. Love him or hate him he does seem to lay his finger on accurate assessments of the political situation vis-a-vie the human condition. An excerpt from his recent column:
GOP SENATE MASSACRE of '08
Quote
Driving the GOP’s imperiled Senate situation, or course, is a massive shift in party identification. While the two parties are normally about tied in party ID, the Democrats now enjoy a 44-30 advantage in the latest Fox News poll of April 29.A combination of the Iraq war, gas prices, the credit crisis and a looming recession are dragging down the Republican Party, big time.
Balance of article:
http://www.vote.com/mmp_printerfriendly.php?id=865
I attribute the current and apparrent demise to the liberal and moderate RINOs running the Party at all levels. Failure to stand in the "trenches" and push back against the successful propaganda war the Soros financed Democrats have waged. Where was the GOP while the Eco-Fascists were planting the seeds of AGW?Where was the GOP while our Country was being silently invaded by illegal immigrants, drug dealers and murdering MS-13 thugs? Where was the GOP leadership on "Energy Independence" when the red flag has long ago( !970's Carter Presidency)been hoisted up the alarm flagpole ? I could go on...on and on asking WHERE OH WHERE is the GOP ? Well........2008 is the YEAR the "CHICKENS" come home to roost !!!

CONSERVATIVE FRED THOMPSON OFFERS ENCOURAGEMENT
As the RINO patient lies on its death bed gasping for air and sustenance, Dr. Fred Thompson makes a house call via WSJ and offers THE remedy for the terminal malaise :"The Death of Conservatism is Greatly Exaggerated"
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1211500490...in_commentaries
The American people can be fooled on the short term.......however,the less informed will not swallow "Keith Doberman" style Marxist-Dog journalism(Actually hate to use the word journalism in connection with anyone whose roots back to NBC or CNN...or CBS....or PBS....geesch just about all of'm) over the long pull.
How wonderfull would it be if CONSERVATIVES found their "mojo"....their "cajones" and for instance......when asked to testify infront of a Senate committee(Oil executives) and asked by Senator Leahy " Sir,Whats your annual salary at Chevron in 2007?" The President of Chevron rebuffs with a question...."Senator I'll answer that question when you come clean to the American people on your total income package including all the Soros pacs you take money from....by the way... you have any sons working as lobbyist on "K" street?Senator Harry Reid has three sons there. Oh and Senator...just for the record.....Chevron makes 9-10 cent per gallon profit on the sale of a gallon of gas....we bear the expense of finding oil, transporting it,refining it,transporting it again, market it and then the top 16 domestic oil companies pay over $60 billion/year in taxes to one layer or another of Government. The federal government confiscates approx 48 cents on every gallon(Federal Excise tax) of gas sold in this Country, for which they do absolutely nothing to earn that humongeous flow of cash...........and you SIR have the chutzpah and temerity to ask....what I know you know is public knowledge since its documented in Chevron's annual stockholders report ....a question regarding my income. If you don't truely know....I suggest you get off your LAZY A** and look it up instead of grand-standing to the MSNBC hoopleheads. Next Question. !!!
Senator Thompson understands that Conservative principles must be embrassed and lived. It is not nearly enough to just "Talk the Talk". Ronald Reagan understood this....even when he was a Democrat !!!

"REPUBLICANS ARE IN DENIAL" piece in Tuesday's 5-27-08 WSJ Opinion Page by Senator Tom Coburn :
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1211846902...in_commentaries
Yes Senator Coburn nails the dillema the GOP currently finds itself in.Essentially "K STREET and COMPASSIONATE CONSERVATISM" have ruined the GOP BRAND. I whole heartedly agree.....earmarks/spending like normal drunken Democrats and the Clinton "I feel your pain" so lets have the Government bail out your risky mortgage, $billions for Katrina relief,$billions for this and for that. Mean while back at the ranch.....these RINOs pass bloated farm bills, build ethanol plants thru subsidies/import taxes on ethanol and sugar.....but not one dime of support on energy independance:Nuclear,Coal, drilling offshore/ANWR etc.
The Republican party's CONSERVATIVES are fed up with these RINO policies that resemble actual Democrat iniatives. These adherents have destroyed the real progress Conservatives have made over the last 15 years .
I hope I never hear the bunching of these two words....compassionate conservatism.....ever again as they describe a phantom mirage that is most certainly NOT CONSERVATIVE....and not really compassionate.

If you buy Coburn's argument, you must also buy his argument that McCain can fix this. He promises to veto earmarks and restrain spending growth.
Obama, on the other hand, promises the following:
1) We can't eat as much as we want
2) We can't drive SUV's
3) Any worship is a result of the steel mill down the block closing.
4) Owning a gun makes us feel better about the economy.
5) A marginal tax rate of 40% (Federal), 14% (FICA) and up to 9% (State/Local)
6) Universal Health Care paid for by the rich
7) Preschool paid for by the rich
The oil companies will essentially be nationalized through confiscatory taxation
9) The drug companies will shut down research because it will never be profitable to market new drugs
and on and on..
If American's buy the Obama message, the rich will play somewhere else, the economy will tank and we deserve what we get.

I agree .....Barry Hussein Obama....is a fraud......a Marxist in liberal clothing and will be a disaster as POTUS. Jimmy Carter mean anything? I will be doing all within my sphere of influence to help McCain get elected and to hammer Obama back to underneath the socialist rock he and his hate-filled racist wife crawled out of. BUT.......McCain must understand one cannot reach across the isle and bargain in good faith with BeezleBub and the forces of evil. McCain has faltered on big issues in the past(McCain-Feingold,Tax cuts, etc). Buying into "Cap&Trade" AGW is BS of biblical proportion,Unilateral nuclear disarmament is dangerous policy to keeping the peace.....as President...McCain will be required to use common sense......amnesty to illegals has not solved the immigration issues. This is the rationale of my opining on this thread......A throw-down on issues that Conservatives heartily believe in......warning "Will Robinson"...do not sell US out on these important matters !!!!

McCain is either a shallow fool or a student of triangulation politics, 1990's style. Mom's democratic friends who wouldn't have voted for Bush in a million years will be voting for McCain against Obama and it is not even a close call for them. McCain can read the exit polls in Kentucky and West Virginia and he knows that that he'll get at least 20% of the democratic vote come November in states that Clinton crushed Obama. No one who voted for Bush will vote for Obama, no matter how mad they are at Bush, and especially after the campaign gets going.
I feel bad for Shadow. He cannot cast an intellectually honest vote for Obama yet he can't cross over and vote for McCain. So many democrats are in his position. What are they to do?

Well bless your mother....but I for one fear the concept of relying on deffecting Democrats and Independents in a politically important race as the Presidency. One day the Democratic Party might wake up and realize that Left-WingNuts can not get elected. Republican response is play up to the mediocrity of their competion to run a candidate that complements many Democrat ideals. I know many Democrats who will deny they are racists that JUST will not vote for Barrack because he's black. A white almost liberal like McCain will do just fine for them. Obama will not win the general election because he's too inexperienced(community organizer),smacks of arrogance and is perceived as an elite anti-American snob. By November, every American with a brain will have Obama figured out. I project he takes 5-6 states: NY,Cal,Oregon,Minn,Mass and maybe Wisc.or Vermont. Thats about it.
Meanwell back at the ranch....with a McCain Presidency not much is happening to build the GOP in the priciples that marshalled in electoral victories all across the "Fruited Plain".
PS: If McCain wants to impress Conservatives......seriously take his campaign to California.I think he's got a shot in California if he can craft the right message. NY is a lost cause for Republicans possibly for ever.

The GOPs demise is not a clean death. Its not a warriors death. Its death by neglect to core priciples. Death by a thousand cuts. The GOP is at a crossroads where ,due to their lack of Party building(From top-Prez Bush on down)they can not field a respectable candidate to take advantage of the Mark Dann self-implosion. No "Bench"....no "B" team members. This is LACK of LEADERSHIP.
Who can we point our fingers at for this deplorable situation that might ...perhaps( I 'm hoping not) elect what should be an unelectable empty suit like Barry Huseein Obama?
I hold President Bush as the supreme incompetent in this matter. He has demonstrated the worst use of the bully pulpit I've seen in the many years I have been a political observer. He has succumbed to slight cronyism is apointments that should have required the highest standards. His last 4 years were squandered opportunities.......and he's postulated and embrassed a false premise...namely to comprise with Democrats on key issues and that reaching across the aisle will bring the Country together. Rather that lead with proven Conservative priciples the Republicans triangulate with political opponents to build a mish-mash of bad policies. Republicans were handed a rare opportunity on AGW and they sided with the Tree huggers....rather than dig in and challenge the voters to become factually educated on the real science...not the political science.
Yes the slow atrophy of the GOP is painful.Unless they change course, we will be paying our respects at the funeral parlor November 5th 2008. From there ....It will be a long 8 years.

What an ironic post.
The party of individual responsibility should blame the individual.
Fight the good fight for central committee seats.
This fall, there will be 20 or so debates around franklin county with legislative and congressional candidates. In the past, these events get around 50 people. There is almost always time for one on one conversations with candidates. It is our own fault if we don't go.
The "B" team as you put it comes from localities. Get to know your city council. The members thereof are your "B" team.
Schedule some time with your representative in the Assembly or Senate. Don't have time. Email them. They actually email back.
Honestly, PG, you can blame the President (everyone else does) but unless you've done everything you can and encourage your friends to do everything they can, it really is the fault of all of us.
With regard to the AG seat, beating Cordray would be next to impossible. The democrats knew this when they took the high road with Dann. Don't blame the opposition for being smart and don't blame our side for not wanting to put money into an unwinnable race when there are bigger prizes in the fall.

You are right on some points here. We have come face to face with the enemy....and he is us. Republicans in general and Conservatives in particular must become....should have already become..... activists in the goal of promoting like minded ,honest candidates like ourselves. We should however expect some honest contributions from the already elected who claim to be Republicans to lead the "good" fight. After all we pay them a good buck to represent the people. Taxpayers like myself shouldn't have to grumble about the need for the Country to be energy independant.
I hate to beat up on Prez Bush...really I do !!! But he's been such a fizzling disappointment. I want my President to take the fight for TRUTH,JUSTICE and the AMerican WAY to the barbarian Democrats. Rush Limbaugh has done more to educate and inspire Conservatives and average Americans than anything the GOP has done. Why have the Republican political Party thats a me-too lap dog for liberal cauuses. (McCain won't drill in ANWR....he's right there with environmental wackos).
Look at candidate Stivers energy plan.....he supports drilling on government reserves...good.....but the rest of his iniative reads like a Democrat proposal....bureaucrcy,wind,solar,etc. A comprehensive energy plan leads with fast tracking nuclear power plant targeted for NE ,fast track coal-fired power plants, build new state-of-art new refineries ......shale to oil plants and of course drill in ANWR. That plan would show leadership and get McCain elected in a landslide.
Many of the participants on this site have been proactive towards better informed citizens and some have thrown their hats and their persons into the battle.I trust they will continue to do this.

PG:
What is right and what is politically-smart are often at odds.
There is no basis for your statement that drilling in ANWR would lead to a political landslide for McCain. An entire generation has been raised believing that man is responsible for the destruction of the planet. Heck, Captain Planet took on the evil corporations every week to the delight of the elementary school crowd.
I agree with you. We need nuclear and we need to drill now. It will happen when the pain is sufficient and Americans are faced with the choice of reducing their lifestyles or allowing new sources of energy to be used. The concept of sending billions of dollars annually to people who want to kill us is very easy to understand. We are funding their weapons programs and they are laughing at us.
I also agree that Senator Stivers energy plan is frustrating - more government, more subsidies etc.. The answers are obvious - nuclear and drilling - no need to subsidize either industry. On the other hand, Commissioner Kilroy's plan is insulting to thinking Americans:
We are being fleeced by greedy oil companies earning record profits and even greedier oil sheiks who are holding America hostage. We need to invest in new energy technologies, bio fuels, wind and conservation to make America energy independent. It won’t happen overnight, but it is cheaper to invest in tomorrow’s energy than guard oil fields in the Middle East. The road to energy independence starts now and it must be a priority for America to remain strong.
So which will play better in D15:
1) Stivers centrist message
2) A right wing Stivers message about drilling/nuclear
3) Kilroy's off the chart blame America first leftist message.
Like I said, the right answer is often not politically smart.

Let me be clear. Drilling in the ANWR alone will not produce a landslide electoral victory for McCain. Making America ENERGY INDEPENDENT via promotion of a COMPREHENSIVE ENERGY PACKAGE as a National Security issue ......fastracting construction of NUCLEAR ENERGY PLANTS first in the NE part of the Country(New England) enabling those heating oil customers to heat their homes with cheap "nuclear" produced electricity, Building COAL FIRED GENERATING PLANTS where prudent(Midwest close to coal production),BUILDING NEW PETROLEUM REFINERIES and drill for oil where ever geologist believe it as prospects including ANWR,OFF COAST. Promote alternative enegy R & D funded by adding SPFs to all the new generation of energy units for example adding .5 cents per kwh of new nuclear energy produced, 50 cents per barrel of new crude pumped out of ANWR etc to finance our R&D for the developement of the planets 22nd century energy. That my friend would be an example of political will and LEADERSHIP.
P.G.C.
PS:

My answer is # 2 - A right wing Stivers message about drilling/nuclear
