Experts: Ex-aide's indictment bad sign for Easley

RALEIGH, N.C. — The laundry list of charges facing a top aide to former Gov. Mike Easley could mean that federal investigators are mounting a serious case against Easley, a former federal prosecutor and a former FBI agent said Friday.

A grand jury on Thursday indicted Ruffin Poole, who was Easley's top aide and legal counsel during the governor's two terms in office, on 51 counts of extortion, bribery, racketeering, mail fraud and money laundering.

Poole is expected to surrender to authorities next week.

Source: Looming Paterson Scandal Involves Affair With NY Woman

By MARVIN SCOTT PIX

NEW YORK (WPIX) - Governor Paterson reportedly is preparing to respond to scandalous rumors that have been swirling around him for the past ten days. A political source tells PIX News the governor will meet with editors of the New York Times tomorrow to answer questions regarding their investigation into his personal conduct.

The Times had been expected to publish a "bombshell" story as early as Monday, and that the governor's resignation was likely to follow.

The only good thing I can say about Murtha is that it will save the taxpayers a lengthy and expensive trial.

Rotten to the AmeriCorps

By THE WASHINGTON TIMES

Among the most wasteful of the spending increases hidden in President Obama's 2011 budget proposal is his plan to create an army of government-funded community organizers at the shocking price of $1.4 billion. While the economy reels and many taxpayers are looking for ways to trim their personal spending, the president is demanding a whopping 59 percent boost for the Corporation for National and Community Service and its best-known program, AmeriCorps. It's time to pull the plug on both.

Gives you a warm, fuzzy feeling doesn't it?

Census 2010: Up to 800 Canvassers With Criminal Records
by Bob McCarty

Despite reports last fall that the Census Bureau had severed ties with community-organizing group known as ACORN, Americans might want to think twice before opening their doors to canvassers for the 2010 Census after reading what I discovered this morning.

According to a report issued by the Government Accountability Office Oct. 7, approximately 785 employees with disqualifying criminal records could still end up working for the Census Bureau this year. Excerpts (below) show the exact wording of the agency’s frightening information about the people who go door to door conducting interviews and collecting information for the 2010 Census:

The Bureau’s efforts to fingerprint employees, which was required as part of a criminal background check, did not proceed smoothly, in part because of training issues. As a result, over 35,000 temporary census workers — over a fifth of the address canvassing workforce — were hired despite the fact that their fingerprints could not be processed and they were not fully screened for employment eligibility.

…of the prints that could be processed, fingerprint results identified 1,800 temporary workers (1.1 percent of total hires) with criminal records that name check alone failed to identify. Of the 1,800 workers with criminal records, approximately 750 (42 percent) were terminated or were further reviewed because the Bureau determined their criminal records — which included crimes such as rape, manslaughter, and child abuse — disqualified them from census employment.

…we estimate that approximately 785 employees with unclassifiable prints could have disqualifying criminal records but still end up working for the Bureau

Democrats stealing votes?  Why ..I am shocked!

Clay Co. precinct worker testifies she stole votes
By Bill Estep - bestep@herald-leader.com

FRANKFORT — A former Clay County precinct worker testified Friday that top election officers in the county taught her how to change people's choices on voting machines to steal votes in the May 2006 primary.

Wanda White testified that Clerk Freddy Thompson — the county's chief election officer — helped show her how to manipulate voting machines along with Charles Wayne Jones, the Democratic election commissioner.

The scheme involved duping people to walk away from the voting computer before they had finished their selections, then changing their choices, said White, the Democratic judge in a precinct in Manchester.

Rangel refuses to step aside after ethics slap

ASSOCIATED PRESS

WASHINGTON — New York Democratic Rep. Charles Rangel said Friday he won’t step down as chairman of the tax-writing House Ways and Means Committee despite being admonished for violating rules by letting corporations pay for his Caribbean trips.

Rangel asserted that that the ethics report “exonerates” him because it says there is no evidence that he knew the trips were sponsored by corporations. The report said his staff knew who paid for the trips.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., sidestepped a question on the New York Democrat’s fate while noting that Rangel remains under investigation on various other alleged ethics lapses. “We’ll just see what happens next,” Pelosi, D-Calif., told reporters.

Dann's assistants now face charges
Onetime aides will help state in its probe of former attorney general’s office
By James Nash

Prosecutors inched closer to bringing criminal charges against former Attorney General Marc Dann yesterday when they charged two of his former top aides with misusing campaign money and failing to report outside income.

As part of an expected plea deal with prosecutors, the two former Dann aides agreed to assist in the ongoing investigation of Dann's 17 months in office.

Dann, a Democrat forced from office in May 2008, was fined $3,000 last year for using his campaign account to pay for family travel, personal cell phones and a security upgrade to his suburban Youngstown home. The former attorney general, however, has escaped more serious charges.

Obama Now Selling Judgeships for Health Care Votes?
Obama names brother of undecided House Dem to Appeals Court.
BY John McCormack

Tonight, Barack Obama will host ten House Democrats who voted against the health care bill in November at the White House; he's obviously trying to persuade them to switch their votes to yes. One of the ten is Jim Matheson of Utah. The White House just sent out a press release announcing that today President Obama nominated Matheson's brother Scott M. Matheson, Jr. to the United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit.
