Global Food Riots

Quote
As ReasonOnline’s Ronald Bailey observed April 8, “the result of these mandates is that about 100 million tons of grain will be transformed this year into fuel, drawing down global grain stocks to their lowest levels in decades. Keep in mind that 100 million tons of grain is enough to feed nearly 450 million people for a year” — assuming 1.2 pounds of grain each, daily.

In short, car engines are burning the crops that feed a half-billion people. That has to hurt.

“There is growing consensus that we need urgently to examine the impact on food prices of different kinds and production methods of biofuels, and ensure that their use is responsible and sustainable,” British Prime Minister Gordon Brown wrote Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda April 10, urging discussion of the issue at July’s G8 Summit in Hokkaido. “Rising food prices threaten to roll back progress we have made in recent years on development. For the first time in decades, the number of people facing hunger is growing,” Brown added.

Sams Club is now limiting Rice sales in this area.

Democrats have had control for just 14 months. We now have record gas prices and record food prices and even the New York Times says that congress is oblivious to the problem:

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/04/24/washingt...165f&ei=5087%0A

As they continue the subsidy programs and mandate that corn be turned into fuel in the farm bill being debated this week.

Congress is responsible for farm policy
Congress is responsible for not allowing us to go get our own oil
Congress is responsible for not allowing nuclear power
Congress is responsible for the lack of entitlement reform

I don't get it.

Congress blames Bush
Congress has an approval rating of 20%
Bush has an approval rating of 40%
The public believes Congress

I don't get it (either).

Like most, if not all liberals, the goal is to deceive in order to stay in power.  If the American public knew the truth of the situation, they would never vote Democrat again.

Of course, you already knew that...your saying "I don't get it" was more rhetorical than anything else....

Let's see if I get this right...

Congress pays farmers not to grow crops on their land.
Congress subsidizes the burning of corn for fuel.
Food prices are going through the roof.

You cannot buy basmati rice in the stores becuase India won't export it.
Food riots are going to get very bad all around the world.
Thank Somebody that you live in the USA and if we wanted to we could feed the entire world. All this takes time. It will get worse before it gets better. There are only so many growing seasons. The food will flow to where people can most afford to pay for it, everyone else is in for some very hard times, many people around the world will die.

Stupid Congress.

This wont help:

Plague rats feast as millions face starvation

MILLIONS of people in India face starvation after a chilling forecast about a plague of rats overrunning a region every half-century appears to have come true.

Millions of tribal families in the state of Mizoram, on the border with Burma and Bangladesh, are struggling to feed themselves after the area was overrun by hundreds of millions of rats -- a phenomenon known as the mautam.

The rodent plague follows the heavy flowering of a local species of bamboo, an event that occurs every 48 years and provides the region's rats with a feast of high-protein foliage.

I'm sure this won't help matters either:

Wheat killer detected in Iran

Dangerous fungus on the move from East Africa to the Middle East

5 March 2008, Rome - A new and virulent wheat fungus, previously found in East Africa and Yemen, has moved to major wheat growing areas in Iran, FAO reported today. The fungus is capable of wreaking havoc to wheat production by destroying entire fields.

Countries east of Iran, like Afghanistan, India, Pakistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan, all major wheat producers, are most threatened by the fungus and should be on high alert, FAO said.

It is estimated that as much as 80 percent of all wheat varieties planted in Asia and Africa are susceptible to the wheat stem rust (Puccinia graminis). The spores of wheat rust are mostly carried by wind over long distances and across continents.

“The detection of the wheat rust fungus in Iran is very worrisome,” said Shivaji Pandey, Director of FAO’s Plant Production and Protection Division.

Japan’s hunger becomes a dire warning for other nations

By Justin Norrie

Mariko Watanabe admits she could have chosen a better time to take up baking. This week, when the Tokyo housewife visited her local Ito-Yokado supermarket to buy butter to make a cake, she found the shelves bare.

“I went to another supermarket, and then another, and there was no butter at those either. Everywhere I went there were notices saying Japan has run out of butter. I couldn’t believe it — this is the first time in my life I’ve wanted to try baking cakes and I can’t get any butter,” said the frustrated cook.

Japan’s acute butter shortage, which has confounded bakeries, restaurants and now families across the country, is the latest unforeseen result of the global agricultural commodities crisis.

Load Up the Pantry

I don't want to alarm anybody, but maybe it's time for Americans to start stockpiling food.

No, this is not a drill.

You've seen the TV footage of food riots in parts of the developing world. Yes, they're a long way away from the U.S. But most foodstuffs operate in a global market. When the cost of wheat soars in Asia, it will do the same here.

Reality: Food prices are already rising here much faster than the returns you are likely to get from keeping your money in a bank or money-market fund. And there are very good reasons to believe prices on the shelves are about to start rising a lot faster.

Food-buying panic hits Canadian stores

With food riots spreading from Haiti to Thailand and retail giants such as Wal-Mart implementing rice rationing in the United States because of shrinking supplies, analysts say Canadians will soon be paying a lot more at the grocery store.

Already, panic buying has hit some Canadian stores.

Bruce Cran, president of the Consumers Association of Canada said he was getting calls in British Columbia that store shelves were being emptied of rice by panicked buyers. "I was in one of the national chains and there was one packet of rice left on the shelf."

"It's a human trait to hoard, but there is only so much food to hoard," he said. "The world crisis is obviously going to have a ripple effect into Canada."

International grain supplies are the tightest in three decades, and prices of wheat, corn, rice and other food staples have doubled or tripled.

This is not the same problem as oil: There are only so many growing cycles.

[HR 875] & [S 425] The Food Police, Criminalizing Organic Farming and the Backyard Gardener, a Violation of the 10th Amendment

This bill is sitting in committee and I am not sure when it is going to hit the floor. One thing I do know is that very few of the Representatives have read it. As usual they will vote on this based on what someone else is saying. Urge your members to read the legislation and ask for opposition to this devastating legislation. Devastating for everyday folks but great for factory farming ops like Monsanto, ADM, Sodexo and Tyson to name a few.

I have no doubt that this legislation was heavily influenced by lobbyists from huge food producers. This legislation is so broad based that technically someone with a little backyard garden could get fined and have their property siezed. It will effect anyone who produces food even if they do not sell but only consume it.

DO NOT TAKE MY WORD FOR IT, READ THIS LEGISLATION FOR YOURSELF. [HR 875] & [S 425] The more people who read this legislation the more insight we are going to get and be able to share. Post your observations and insights below. Urge your members to read this legislation and to oppose the passage of this legislation.

Pay special attention to:

Section 3 which is the definitions portion of the bill-read in it's entirety. section 103, 206 and 207- read in it's entirety. Red flags I found and I am sure there are more...........

Legally binds state agriculture depts to enforcing federal guidelines effectively taking away the states power to do anything other than being food police for the federal dept.

Effectively criminalizes organic farming but doesn't actually use the word organic.

Effects anyone growing food even if they are not selling it but consuming it.

Effects anyone producing meat of any kind including wild game.

Legislation is so broad based that every aspect of growing or producing food can be made illegal. There are no specifics which is bizarre considering how long the legislation is.

Section 103 is almost entirely about the administrative aspect of the legislation. It will allow the appointing of officials from the factory farming corporations and lobbyists and classify them as experts and allow them to determine and interpret the legislation. Who do you think they are going to side with?

Section 206 defines what will be considered a food production facility and what will be enforced up all food production facilities. The wording is so broad based that a backyard gardener could be fined and more.

Section 207 requires that the state's agriculture dept act as the food police and enforce the federal requirements. This takes away the states power and is in violation of the 10th amendment.

There are many more but by the time I got this far in the legislation I was so alarmed that I wanted to bring someone's attention to it. (to the one person who reads my blog)

Didn't Stalin nationalize farming methods that enabled his administration to gain control over the food supply? Didn't Stalin use the food to control the people?

Things you can do

Contact your members by phone, fax, or use the eWeb form on their official websites, and ask them to oppose HR 875 and S 425.

Senate http://www.senate.gov/general/contact_information/senators_cfm.cfm

House http://www.house.gov/house/MemberWWW_by_State.shtml

Local Elected Officials http://www.congress.org/congressorg/dbq/officials/?

Find out who sits on your states agriculture and farming committee and contact them with your concerns.

Continue to contact your elected officials and let them know your position on legislation and why. Get active at the local and state levels, this is the quickest way to initiate change.
