The Honorable Barack Obama
President of the United States
The White House
1600 Pennsylvania Ave, NW
Washington, D.C. 20500

Dear Mr. President,

I read with great interest press reports indicating that Administration officials and Democrat congressional leaders have struck a deal related to the so-called “Cadillac” tax on high cost health plans. Numerous press reports indicate that health insurance plans covering state and local government employees and plans for employees in collective bargaining agreements would be exempt from the tax until 2018, while individuals employed in the private sector that are not covered by union contracts would pay the tax as early as 2013 — even if they have the exact same insurance coverage.

While the reported deal is bad enough for working Americans, I am concerned that the deal that was negotiated behind closed doors may also have been designed to benefit federal government officials and employees at the expense of other Americans. Specifically, I request that the Administration provide answers to the following questions prior to announcing any final agreement on a health care bill:

1.      Will the health care plans offered to Members of Congress and Administration officials, including Cabinet officers, White House staff, and political appointees, be exempt from the proposed excise tax in the same manner as those covered under collective bargaining agreements?

2.      Will the health care plans offered to federal employees, including over 382,000 employees making in excess of $100,000 a year, be exempt from the proposed excise tax in the same manner as those covered under collective bargaining agreements?

I regret that I am forced to send this letter. I do not believe it would be necessary if you and your Administration had televised the health care negotiations on C-SPAN, as you committed to during the campaign.

Sincerely,

Eric Cantor

For all of the clueless liberals out there (which means 99%):

Exit poll: Health care mattered

Scott Brown's opposition to congressional health care legislation was the most important issue that fueled his U.S. Senate victory in Massachusetts, according to exit poll data collected following the Tuesday special election.

Fifty-two percent of Bay State voters who were surveyed as the polls closed said they opposed the federal health care reform measure and 42 percent said they cast their ballot to help stop President Obama from passing his chief domestic initiative.

"I'm not surprised it was the top issue, but I was surprised by how overwhelming an issue it was. It became a focal point for the frustration that has been brewing with voters, and it's a very personal issue that affects everyone," said Tony Fabrizio of Fabrizio, McLaughlin & Associates, a Republican firm that conducted the exit poll of 800 voters.

If the Clinton News Network commissions a poll, do liberals have to believe it?  Nah, not if it disagrees with their world view!!

Disaster poll: Nearly 70 percent say dump Dems' health care bill
By: Byron York
Chief Political Correspondent

Just when it appeared that the numbers for the Democratic health care proposals passed by the House and Senate couldn't get any worse -- they have. A new poll by CNN and Opinion Research, taken from January 22 to January 24, shows that 69 percent of respondents say Congress should dump the current Democratic health care proposals and either write an entirely new health bill or stop working on the subject altogether.

Danny Williams going to U.S. for heart surgery

Great -- American hospitals are some of the best in the world.

According to one source, of the top 10 hospitals in the world, 8 of the them are the U.S.

I suspect that of the top 2000 hospitals, 80% or so are in the U.S.

The problem is that, only a small percentage of Americans can afford care in these hospitals.

Of the industrialized nations of the world, the U.S. has the lowest percentage of people who can actually afford medical care.

From The CBC news article (emphasis added)

"The premier's office provided few details, beyond confirming that he would have heart surgery and saying that it was not necessarily a routine procedure."

Because of the extensive (government subsidized) research,  there are specialists in the U.S. that are experts in fields that may not be found elsewhere.  A Canadian nephew of the Shadow went (paid for by the provincial govt) to Boston where there is a (research) specialist in his specific problem.  No such specialist was available in Canada.

These episodes only reflect individual cases and should not be telescoped into generalized political sound bites.

Americans go to Mexico, Costa Rica, India etc. to have medical care that is much less expensive and follows U.S. standards.  No good statistics are available for this "Medical Tourism".

VA State Senate Approves GOP Health Insurance Freedom Bill

Quote
“Even Democrats in the Virginia Senate realize that the health care nightmare being negotiated behind closed doors across the Potomac is bad news for their constituents,” Mullins said. “Monday’s vote shows again that Reps. Perriello, Connolly and the rest of the Democrats in Washington, D.C., aren’t listening to their employers — the voters of the Commonwealth of Virginia.”

The bill passed by the Democrat controlled State Senate prohibits requiring individuals to purchase Health Insurance.  As you might imagine it will probably fly through the GOP controlled House of Delegates.

"I can't think of anything more barbarian than using the government to impose your beliefs on someone else"

Does this mean that you are an anarchist? Ironic, anarchy represents, to you, civilized behavior.

Does it mean that I am barbaric to use the courts to enforce contracts others have signed when I believe they have violated the terms of that contract?

Does it mean that I an barbaric use government power to enforce my rights when I believe I have been wronged?

What is your definition of civilized behavior?  Utopia is anarchic.  Many disagreements we have with others in everyday life do not involve government intervention.  Does this make you an anarchist?

We live in a country where government has a specifically defined role to which it is confined.  Attempts by others to have government exceed its boundaries in order to leverage weight in favor of their wishes is unjust.  Is your opposition to the quote and indication that you believe the opposite?

Ken Cuccinelli: Founders would cheer Virginia’s anti-Obamacare bill

Quote
It is the states that were expected to control the federal government, that’s why Madison said that the “different governments will control each other” in Federalist 51.  The “different governments” are the state and federal governments.  It’s part of our constitutional role as a state.

As attorney general for Virginia, I’m with Madison. The people of Virginia have every reason to expect that when the government violates the law – especially the supreme law of the land, the Constitution – there will be someone to protect them every bit as much as they are protected against violations of law by ordinary criminals.

For too long, the federal government has operated as if it granted authority and freedoms to people and the states. It’s time to start returning this system to its proper balance. The system has broken down, and that has real consequences for jobs, the economy, our security and our freedom.

Virginia’s history is steeped in protecting liberty – the foundation of our nation’s greatness. Once again, Virginia is taking the lead in protecting our citizens’ sacred liberty.

I like Dain used to put as his tagline - Molon Labe.
