Take the mini-civics exam at the top of the article. It is easy for us know-it-alls....but hang your head for those can't pass it.
Americans don't know civics
By Michelle Healy, USA TODAY
From high-school dropouts to college graduates to elected officials, Americans are "alarmingly uninformed" about the USA's history, founding principals and economy knowledge needed to participate wisely in civic life, says a report scheduled to be released Thursday.
The study, the third in a series by the non-profit Intercollegiate Studies Institute, finds that half of U.S. adults can name all three branches of government, and 54% know that the power to declare war belongs to Congress. Almost 40% incorrectly said that it belongs to the president.
MORE: Questions and how students scored in '07
Those who have held elected office lack civic knowledge; 43% do not know the Electoral College is a constitutionally mandated assembly that elects the president. One in five thinks it "trains those aspiring for higher office" or "was established to supervise the first televised presidential debates."
"Without knowledge of your country's history, key texts and institutions, you don't have a frame of reference to judge the politics and policies of today," says Richard Brake, head of the institute's American Civic Literacy Program.
Earlier reports focused solely on college students; the new study expands the focus and concludes Americans across all economic, educational and political/social backgrounds are equally lacking. Among findings:
71% earn an F; the average score was 49%. Ages 25 to 34 had an average score of 46%; ages 45 to 64 had a 52% average. Of 164 respondents who say they have held elected office, 44% was average.
Those with bachelor's degrees had an average score of 57% vs. 44% for those with a high-school diploma. The average score for advanced degree-holders inches up to 65%, or a D.
Civic knowledge declines in proportion to time spent using passive media, such as TV. Reading and talking about history and current events, using the Internet and being involved in political activities has a positive effect.

Son, one day you could grow up to be the Chairman of the House Financial Services Committee...but I'm afraid your IQ is too high. For example, here is your first question, how can a company repay a loan if it is not financially viable?
It can't?
You are too smart to be in Congress, son. You are also too smart to be a journalist.
WASHINGTON (AP) A Key Democrat says a House auto industry bailout would require that U.S. automakers immediately repay $25 billion in government loans next year if they can't show they're financially viable.

Obama, King of Fools
by Ted Nugent
11/21/2008
It is a defining indicator that the embarrassing, self inflicted dumbing down of America is all but complete when people vote against their own self-interest.
I'll say it: it is obvious that many Americans are not very smart. Quite dumb, actually. To listen to the Sirius radio interview with Obama voters from Harlem mindlessly cheering on Obama as the interviewer attributes McCain's policies to the Democrats is pathetic and an inescapable indicator of the blind leading the blind. Not Godbless or goddam America! God help America.
Trying to explain how our economy works and why lowering taxes is always better for them and their country, than imposing higher taxes is an economic bridge too far for many of the Obama sheep. Unfortunately there is no "See Spot & the Economy Run" book for the hooked on phonics crowd. Many of these numbskulls can't balance a check book or spell "e-c-o-n-o-m-i-c-s" but they sure know who will give them stuff. The lie is impossible.
Expecting these idiotscitizens to have analyzed the tax positions of Obama and McCain and arrive at a decision that truly benefits them and America is wishful thinking. The reason is that they know zilch about how the economy operates and worse, don't care. Bama will take care of us. Four very scary things-a sow grizzly with cubs at closerange, a coiled rattlesnake in striking distance, me in a rental car in the left lane, and dunces with credit cards.
And indeed they are dunces, products of a tax burning, failed public education system. That is, if they even bothered to complete high school. They don't read newspapers or books, and even if they did, I got twenty bucks that says they couldn't comprehend what they read. They are morons in the first degree. And clearly, they vote.

Teacher forces teens to question being 'straight'
The mother of a Wisconsin teenager was stunned when her high school senior brought home a questionnaire assigned by his English teacher that asked, among several provocative questions, "Is it possible that your heterosexuality stems from a neurotic fear of others of the same sex?"
http://www.wnd.com/index.php?fa=PAGE.view&pageId=82529
Other questions asked:
What do you think caused your heterosexuality?
When and how did you decide you were a heterosexual?
Is it possible that your heterosexuality is just a phase you may grow out of?
Is it possible that your heterosexuality stems from a neurotic fear of others of the same sex?
Do your parents know that you are straight? Do your friends and/or roommate(s) know? How did they react?
Why do you insist on flaunting your heterosexuality? Can't you just be who you are and keep it quiet?
Why do heterosexuals feel compelled to seduce others into their lifestyles?
A disproportionate majority of child molesters are heterosexual. So you consider it safe to expose children to heterosexual teachers?
With all the societal support marriage receives, the divorce rate is spiraling. Why are there so few stable relationships among heterosexuals?
Statistics show that lesbians have the lowest incidence of sexually transmitted diseases. Is it really safe for a woman to maintain a heterosexual lifestyle and run the risk of disease and pregnancy?
Considering the menace of overpopulation, how could the human race survive if everyone were heterosexual?
Would you want your child to be heterosexual, knowing the problems that s/he would face?

Property-tax collections climb as home prices fall
By Dennis Cauchon, USA TODAY
Property taxes are rising across the USA despite the steepest drop in home values since the Great Depression.
Home values dropped 17% in the third quarter compared with the same period in 2007, reports the S&P/Case-Shiller Home Price Index. At the same time, property tax collections across the USA rose 3.1%, according to the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis.
State and local governments are on track to collect more than $400 billion in property taxes this year, the most ever. One reason: Laws in most states that prevent big tax hikes when property values soar also block big tax drops when values sink.
The housing market collapse has caused a recession that's hurt sales and income tax collections.
But property taxes collected mostly for public schools have escaped serious damage. As a result, public education is one of the few sectors of the economy still adding jobs.
FIND MORE STORIES IN: California | Florida | Beverly Hills | Nevada | Colorado Springs | Great Depression | Jay Leno | El Paso County | James Wells
"Property taxes aren't always popular, but they are a very stable tax, even in tough times," says Thomas Gentzel, executive director of the Pennsylvania School Board Association.
Property taxes haven't fallen since 1934, the BEA says.
What's keeping property taxes up while home prices fall:
Property tax limits. Most states cap how fast taxes rise in boom times. In bad times, the same laws keep taxes from falling and even permit modest increases on most homes.
Arizona, California, Florida and Nevada the four states hit hardest when overheated real estate markets crashed and triggered waves of foreclosures all have tax laws that work this way.
Tonight Show host Jay Leno's property taxes on his Beverly Hills home will increase $1,500 this year to $54,000, even though home values in the area fell by one-third since last year, California public records show. Reason: His mansion is taxed based on the $2.5 million purchase price in 1987, plus 2% annual increases.
Nevada schools will collect $730 million in property taxes this year, up 5%, says Nevada deputy school superintendent James Wells. "Property taxes are a bright spot. Sales taxes are the problem," he says.
Delayed appraisals. Most states are slow to change the assessed value of homes. Some Pennsylvania counties haven't done major reappraisals for decades. Elsewhere, homeowners must pay taxes on peak values for years before new assessments reflect plunging prices.
Colorado residents will pay taxes in 2010 and 2011 based on what their homes were worth in the first half of 2008. "The time lag can help you or hurt you, " says Mark Lowderman, tax assessor in El Paso County, Colo., which includes Colorado Springs. "Nobody complains when prices are rising."

What makes a teacher good proves test-worthy question
Sunday, December 28, 2008 3:31 AM
FROM THE PLAIN DEALER VIA AP
CLEVELAND -- Researchers who agree that good teaching is invaluable to student learning struggle to determine what makes a great educator.
Factors up for debate include teacher training, state certification, an advanced degree and years of experience, according to a package of stories published yesterday by The Plain Dealer.
Adam Gamoran, interim dean at the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Education, said the question has been studied for more than a century.
Researchers focused first on personality, then qualifications, then work done in the classroom.
"It's a hard nut to crack," Gamoran said. "The things that are easy to measure don't matter that much, and the things that matter aren't easy to measure."
The National Council on Teacher Quality concludes that, among other factors determining a teacher's skill:
Master's and other advanced degrees don't appear to improve teachers' effectiveness, although such degrees, combined with experience, largely determine how much teachers are paid.
The value of classroom experience seems to level off or become unpredictable after the first four or five years.
Attributes such as a sense of responsibility and the ability to motivate count for a lot.
Jennifer Walker, a Youngstown high-school teacher who is Ohio's teacher of the year, said teaching is both an art and a science.

ROSEMOND: High self-esteem for kids a sham
A fellow, slightly upset at my recent series of columns dealing with the myriad stupid parenting ideas that came out of the 1960s, accuses me of painting with too broad a brush. Without being very specific, he says some of the parenting changes fashioned during that decade were worthwhile. What?
In the 1960s, American parents stopped going to their elders for advice and began going instead to mental health professionals people like me. To create a devoted client base, we had to come up with something new. So we cut from whole cloth a nouveau philosophy that was 180 degrees removed from the philosophy that had successfully guided every previous generation of parents. The centerpiece of this new point of view was the notion that high self-esteem is a good thing and parents should do all in their power to make sure their children acquire it.
Mind you, we made this up. Absolutely no empirical evidence, obtained by scientific means, existed to support this claim. It just sounded good; therefore, it was easy to market. High self-esteem is the card that supports the house of cards that is what I call "postmodern psychological parenting." Pull that card and the whole stack falls.
The supposed merits of high self-esteem were sold on the basis of rhetoric, not evidence. The evidence, however belated, is now in, and the evidence says high self-esteem isn't the holy grail it was promoted as being.
People with high self-regard, the evidence says, possess low regard for others. Instead of seeking opportunities to serve others, they seek to manipulate others. Furthermore, people with high self-regard tend to antisocial behavior. People incarcerated in maximum security prisons have very high self-regard, for example.

Does the question really need to be answered?
Why Do So Many Public Officials Hate the Public Schools?
By Doug Bandow on 3.25.10 @ 3:46AM
We are supposed to love the public schools. So we are constantly told by public officials. Public officials who seem far less enthused about sending their own kids to the public schools.
Reports the New York Times:
When Arne Duncan, the secretary of education, was chief executive of the Chicago Public Schools, his office kept a log of nearly 40 pages listing the local politicians and business people and others who sought help getting children into the city's most selective public schools.
According to an article Tuesday in The Chicago Tribune, which first obtained and reported on the confidential log, those who sought such help included 25 aldermen, Mayor Richard M. Daley's office, the State House speaker, the state attorney general, the former White House social secretary and a former United States senator.
A spokesman for the Department of Education said Tuesday that the log was a record of those who asked for help, and that neither Mr. Duncan nor the aide who maintained the list, David Pickens, ever pressured principals to accept a child. Rather, he said, the creation of the list was an effort to reduce pressure on principals.
Ah, the sacrifices made by public servants. "To bad about the local school my neighbors are stuck in. Help me get into one of the handful of public schools which work!"
Shouldn't the rest of us get the same opportunity?

So..if the older generation(s) hate socialism and love capitalism, where do you think young people are learning that progressivism and socialism are acceptable?
The Generation Gap [Maggie Gallagher]
The generation gap in political values is stark, according to this Pew poll: A majority of people over 65 have a negative view of socialism and a positive view of capitalism. The 18- to 29-year-olds? They love the progressive label, only marginally object to socialism, and have a negative view of capitalism.

Let me get this straight...this pseudo-intellectual preaches hatred of Christians and Christianity in the class room, then gets called on it in the form of a lawsuit, and then preaches that the right is against "tolerance" in front of a Mensa crowd.
And the baboons all nodded their heads in agreement while scratching their armpits.
Classic.

I know that you are intolerant of ideas counter your own and think that the best policy is to ignore competing ideas.
But still.......
Corbett was found by U.S. District Court Judge James Selna in Santa Ana to have violated the First Amendment's establishment clause when he referred to creationism as "religious, superstitious nonsense" during a fall 2007 classroom lecture.
Doesn't this strike everyone as odd. The first amendment establishment clause prevents the government from sponsoring a religion.
Calling a belief a religious belief does not constitute sponsorship of a religion.
Calling a belief a superstition does not constitute sponsorship of a religion.
Calling a belief nonsense does not constitute sponsorship of a religion.
Nor does calling a belief religious superstitious nonsense constitute sponsorship of a religion.
On one point I agree with Blair: the school system has failed with the young man who is part of the lawsuit against Corbett.
He turned out to be an absolute twit.

Coburn Report Shows Billions in Education Budget Spent on 'School House Pork'
FoxNews.com
What do mariachi classes, wine studies and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame have in common?
They were all funded by federal Department of Education earmarks, according to an extensive new report released Thursday by Sen. Tom Coburn.
The Oklahoma Republican, in a study called "School House Pork," is urging the federal government to suspend these education "slush funds" after finding that lawmakers have secured 5,563 such earmarks, worth $2.3 billion over the past decade.
