Arpaio protest takes on new tone

It was the standard protest outside Sheriff Joe Arpaio's office, with a twist.

Instead of the anger that colors most of the demonstrations, there was an air of pride in the crowd of about 50 people gathered outside the Wells Fargo Building in downtown Phoenix on Wednesday.

With the Department of Justice's announcement on Tuesday that the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office was under investigation for discriminating in their police practices, activists who have protested Arpaio's policies for more than a year felt like their work had finally paid off.

"We made it, congratulations," said Teresa Castro, a political organizer with Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now.

"I know it's only one step," the ACORN leader was quick to add.

The issue facing the protestors now, said Randy Parraz, an organizer with Maricopa Citizens for Safety and Accountability, is how to build on this momentum in the coming year.

"This is a short-term victory. Our work is not done," Parraz said. "We have to continue to apply the pressure from the bottom up."

To that end, Parraz said organizers are coordinating a "week of action" to coincide with the March birth of the late labor leader Cesar Chavez that would include protests and fasting.

House Judiciary Committee to look into Arpaio

A day after the Justice Department announced it is conducting a civil rights investigation of Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio's office, the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee said he will hold hearings to look into complaints that deputies enforcing immigration laws are discriminating against Hispanics.

U.S. Rep. John Conyers, D-Mich., chair of the Judiciary Committee, will hold the hearings next month along with the chairs of the immigration, crime, and constitution subcommittees looking into allegations that deputies enforcing immigration laws are unlawfully targeting Latinos to search for illegal immigrants.

"We're not trying to persecute or take advantage of anybody," Conyers said at a press conference. "Law enforcement officers have a very important and valuable function. The problem is they can't interpret the law their own way to harass or use racial strategies to determine who they arrest."

A spokesman for the Judiciary Committee said Arpaio will be asked to testify during the hearing. A date has not been set.

Arpaio, who steadfastly denies his deputies profile while enforcing immigration laws, said he will consult a lawyer before he decides whether to testify. He said he has already written to Conyers inviting him to come to Arizona to see his operations for himself and questioned why Conyers wants to hold hearings when a Justice Department investigation is already underway.

I'm an idiot, but is the complaint that not enough non-Hispanic illegals are being found?
Too many hispanics are showing up in the raids? Not enough illegal Swedes and Norwegians?
The good Sheriff must be doing something wrong if his round-up of illegals is insufficiently diverse?

The real investigation should be as to why the Federal government is not doing its job to protect the border as evidenced by Sheriff Joe having to do their job for them!
Now the filthy rotten bastards want to investigate him.

That was spot on Counter.....and so true... One Major problem is   Where is John McCain... John Kyle.... We can't find ANY high ranking Republicans to defend our ELECTED sheriff!... they are cowards ... We have Trent Franks and a few others....I cannot Believe our congressmen are letting Conyers and his gang go after our sheriff... Glad that Joe Arpaio is one tough dude... he said BRING IT!
