Like Man Made Global Warming, the CFC caused Ozone Hole, Wind Power is a viable energy source, etc etc etc, the loony left's claim to be the party of science is once again mocked by their claim of great promise with the research into EMBRYONIC Stem Cells. They of course never point out that the real promise is in ADULT Stem Cell research. Here are some obvious clues:

1) Nothing is stopping private industry from studying this "science" but they aren't
2) California has spent a billion dollars on this junk science with NOTHING to show for it
3) Name the last major health discovery that came out of Federal Funding

The reason EMBRYONIC Stem Cells over little if any promise is very simple and any 2 year old with a kindergarten education in biology should realize it immediately. An EMBRYONIC Stem Cell and any tissue or product developed from it WOULD BE A FOREIGN BODY to anybody but the stem cell doner. Except for identical twins, there is a 100% guarantee that it will be rejected unless we repeal the laws of biology. Now, compare that to the promise of ADULT Stem Cell research.

1) You can take an ADULT STEM CELL and convert it to a cell that behaves exactly and has all the characteristics of an EMBRYONIC STEM CELL.
2) Any tissue developed from an ADULT STEM CELL would have a far less probability of being rejected
3) EMBRYONIC STEM CELLS are the cells most removed from the final tissue meaning that the embryonic stem cell must then be changed to a liver stem cell and then changed to a liver. Wouldn't it simply be smarter to take an adult liver stem cell and grow a liver from that? You eliminate the step of conversion from embryonic stem cell to liver stem cell, and having the donor as the source you reduce the chance of rejection.

Anyway, this claim of great promise needing Federal Funding is yet another huge lie by the Democrats. The real basis of the Democrat's support for EMBRYONIC Stem Cells is to bolster their defense of abortion (The Source of some Embryonic Stem Cells) and to smear Republicans as anti-science neanderthals.

Anyway, this thread to to document the progress of both Adult and Embryonic Stem Cell research. My position is that any advance made by Embryonic Stem Cells will be able to be duplicated with Adult Stem Cells, and that there will be no major advances due to EMBRYONIC STEM CELLS, and that all the major advances will be due to ADULT Stem Cell research.

Here is an example of the risks of EMBRYONIC STEM CELLS. This child was sacrificed due to the insanity of this "science."

TAU researchers first to establish a medical risk of controversial stem cell treatments

Adult stem cells are proving to be just as effective for a growing number of medical treatments as those taken from human embryos. Now Tel Aviv University scientists are confirming that the rapid deployment of adult stem cell treatments can avoid deadly risks associated with controversial embryonic stem cell treatments, The Jerusalem Post recently reported.

According to the newspaper, an Israeli youth suffering from a rare genetic disease was sent to Russia to undergo a risky and experimental procedure using embryonic stem cells. Although the patient's Israeli doctors warned the family about the dangers of the experimental procedure, the family went to an unnamed clinic in Moscow for treatments when the boy was 10 and 12.

My bet is that the author confused adult stem cells being converted to embryonic stem cells, vs actually using embryonic stem cell from another body. If they are using actual embryonic stem cells there is sure to be a lawsuit because adult stem cells offer the same promise with far lower risk.

Under the new treatment, embryonic stem cells are transformed into replicas of the missing cells. They are then placed on an artificial membrane which is inserted in the back of the retina.

Tom Bremridge, chief executive of the Macular Disease Society, said: “This is a huge step forward for patients. We are extremely pleased that the big guns have become involved, because, once this treatment is validated, it will be made available to a huge volume of patients.”

Embryonic stem cells have the ability to develop into all types of body tissue. Their use is controversial, however, because it involves the destruction of human embryos.

Laboratory trials completed by the British team have demonstrated that stem cells can prevent blindness in rats with a similar disease to AMD. They have also successfully tested elements of the technology in pigs.

The team is led by Professor Pete Coffey, director of the London Project to Cure Blindness, working alongside Lyndon da Cruz, a surgeon at Moorfields.

Coffey said the treatment would take “less than an hour, so it really could be considered as an outpatient procedure. We are trying to get it out as a common therapy”.

He welcomed Pfizer’s agreement to manufacture the membranes, saying: “This is a major development because of the size of the partner. We need a big pharmaceutical company to scale it up.

“We have nearly 14m people within Europe with AMD. This will ensure that the therapy gets through to clinical trials in a safe and effective manner.”

Professor Peng Khaw, director of the Biomedical Research Centre at Moorfields and the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology, added: “This shows that stem cell therapy is coming of age. It offers great hope for many sufferers around the world who cannot be treated with conventional treatment.” He added: “All my patients say to me is, ‘When will this stem cell treatment be ready? I want it now’.”

Pfizer’s role would be crucial in bringing production of the membranes to an industrial level.

The team is applying for regulatory approval for trials from the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency, the Human Tissue Authority and the gene therapy advisory committee.

The clinical trial, due within two years, is expected to be the second in the world to use embryonic stem cells on humans. The first, on patients with spinal cord injuries, will start this year in America.

The quest for versatile, grow-in-a-dish transplant tissue took a step towards clinical use Thursday when researchers announced they have found a safe way to transform skin cells into stem cells.

Researchers say the method is so promising they hope to apply for approval to begin clinic trials by the middle of next year.

"This is the first safe method of generating patient specific stem cells," said study author Robert Lanza, the chief scientific officer at Stem Cell & Regenerative Medicine International.

Oprah and Michael J Fox nearly speechless as they learn about adult stem cells:

As I've suggested before, much of the real drive for using embryonic stem cells instead of adult stem cells comes from abortion rights/pro-choice advocates.  The reason?  Both abortion and embryonic stem cell research rely on ignoring the simple truth that an embryo is a small, but completely unique human life.  Thus abortion rights advocates are glad to have another cause helping them support their deception about this simple truth.

"When does human life begin, Mr. Obama?"  Even with his promotion to President, and an honorary degree form Notre Dame, I'll bet it's still above his pay grade.

THE GREAT STEM-CELL-RESEARCH SCAM

By MICHAEL FUMENTO

MEDICAL-RESEARCH insiders know that embryonic-stem-cell technol ogy is proving a dead end -- Dr. Bernadine Healy, a former director of the National Institutes of Health and once an ES-cell-research enthusiast, calls it "obsolete." But the Obama administration has opened wide the federal funding floodgates -- the triumph of a big special-interest PR and lobbying campaign.

In fact, the research will line the pockets of a relatively few individuals -- at considerable cost for the rest of us, since the funding means billions that won't go to more promising areas.

Though ES cells have long been touted as the miracle just down the road, researchers keep driving into big potholes. For starters, there's the rejection problem: Your body naturally attacks foreign cells, even ones that might help you. So cell recipients must permanently use dangerous immunosuppressive drugs.

Further, the cells have a nasty tendency to become cancerous or to form teratomas -- meaning "monster tumors."

One study reporting successful results in humans involves harvesting patients' own stem cells, purifying them, and injecting them directly into the heart muscle. The stem cells have a surface marker called CD34, which means they are capable of growing new blood vessels.
