Britain apologises for 'Third World' hospital
http://www.breitbart.com/article.php?id=CNG.09affc88c9815310300a92378aed0564.2f1&show_article=1

Quote from: Breitbart.com

The British government apologised Wednesday after a damning official report into a hospital likened by one patient's relative to "a Third World" health centre.
[...]
Between 400 and 1,200 more people died than would have been expected in a three-year period at the National Health Service (NHS) hospital, according to an investigation by the Healthcare Commission watchdog.
[...]
Receptionists with no medical training were left to to assess patients arriving at the hospital's accident and emergency department, the report found.
[...]
"What we saw in those eight weeks will haunt us for the rest of our lives," said the 47-year-old. "We saw patients drinking out of flower vases they were so thirsty.

I have an idea... Let's do what England is doing! Free (substandard & deadly) health care for everyone!  Huh

The reason any type of socialism fails is because it 1) eliminates incentives for producers, and 2) the subsequent inferiority/shortage of produced goods forces the distributor to engage in market-clearing (e.g., long waits, elaborate protocols).   Unfortunately, given that envy and laziness are hard-wired into our species, every generation will probably have to learn this lesson over and over again.  Thomas Jefferson was right when he said "the price of freedom is eternal vigilance."

Foreshadowing?

Quote
Wisconsin requiring Catholic institutions to provide contraception coverage

A provision in the new state budget mandates the coverage as a “benefit.”

The bishops charged that the state government’s mandate violates constitutional rights as well as religious values, citing the right of conscience established in the Wisconsin Constitution. Religious freedom also includes the ability to publicly witness to one’s values in what one does and in what one declines to do, they explained.

“Nowhere does the Constitution say that the right of conscience is protected except in matters related to human reproduction,” their statement said. “Whatever course we pursue in this matter, we want all Catholics in Wisconsin to know that we will also continue to affirm and communicate the teachings of our faith.”

LA Congresswoman Praises Cuban Revolution & Castro’s Health Care System

"You can think whatever you want to about Fidel Castro, but he was one of the brightest leaders I have ever met."

Rep. Diane Watson [D] made some astonishing comments including claims that those opposed to health care reform are attempting to destroy a president “who looks like me.”

Later, Watson praised heath care in Fidel Castro’s Cuba — and, it seemed, the Cuban revolution itself.

The officer's response?

"It ain't no more, OK?"

Rationed care is coming, and the death panels will not be far behind.

Between 2012 and 2030, 74 million baby boomers will retire, cease to be the major contributors to Medicare and become the major drain on Medicare. How long will an overtaxed labor force in a de-Christianized America be willing to pay the bill to keep all those aging boomers alive? (Already, almost a third of all unborn babies in America have their lives terminated each year with the consent of their mothers.)

"The Government Can"

The reality is that No, the government can't.

Years ago a professor of mine would object whenever a member of the class would utter a phrase containing a modal term such as 'can' or 'can't', 'could' or 'couldn't', or 'possible' or 'impossible'. He would remind the student that there are no generic modals.

That's the mistake this video makes, viz., assuming that 'can' is a generic modal.

Theoretically -- logically -- the government can take all your money.

In reality it can't.

Theoretically - or logically speaking you could transport the entire country of the United States of America to Mars tomorrow. No laws of logic prevent it.

In reality you can't. Given the current state of technology, the laws of nature prevent it.

There is a big difference between theory and reality.

That's why I remain an ideological sceptic.

As an ideological enthusiast I can see why you like this video.

I use the term 'enthusiasm' in Hume's sense
