A man traveling home from a Campaign for Liberty (Ron Paul) event was detained by TSA in St. Louis for carrying cash.

St. Louis, if you remember, is the source of the Missouri Information Analysis Center (MIAC) "Strategic Report" that came out last month listing Campaign for Liberty supporters, Christians, and other harmless groups as "potential terrorists."

Tyranny indeed. This man is lucky that his detainment is public knowledge.

Otherwise he could be secretly detained, imprisoned, and tortured (enhanced interrogation methods)-- and all done quite legally thanks to the Bush administration.

The Bush administration -- I should say Dick Cheney with legal advice -- no he didn't accept advice -- with legal backing from David Addington and John Yoo -- makes it all quite normal and legal.

If the president feels he needs to exercise (to use Cheney's words), "monarchical prerogative", then he is fully justified to wave the laws regarding torture, secret detentions and warrentless surveillance.

Obama is doing nothing to set this process aside -- nothing to bring justice to those such as Cheney, Addington, Rumsfeld and Yoo who clearly violated the constitution they took an oath to defend and the basic rights codified in international law.

Until these criminals are brought to justice, I wouldn't hold out much hope that the rights of the rest of us will be respected.

"Don't worry about giving up your liberties if you you have nothing to hide."

Finally someone stood up to these guys.  I take it that they aren't used to people asking them questions.  "We ask the questions here."

My favorite part was,

TSA: "You didn't mind answering that question."
flyer: "It's on my driver's license."

I hope this brings down some heat on the TSA

Man, don't I feel safe.  Well I guess I should if I don't have anything to hide, right?  Guess where they can stick it?

Police say syringes will help stop drunk driving

By REBECCA BOONE, Associated Press Writer Rebecca Boone, Associated Press Writer   – 39 mins ago

BOISE, Idaho – When police officer Darryll Dowell is on patrol in the southwestern Idaho city of Nampa, he'll pull up at a stoplight and usually start casing the vehicle. Nowadays, his eyes will also focus on the driver's arms, as he tries to search for a plump, bouncy vein.

"I was looking at people's arms and hands, thinking, 'I could draw from that,'" Dowell said.

Good/Bad idea?

This is a slippery slope.  Of course some will argue, "Why be afraid if you've done nothing wrong?"

High-speed chase ends when OnStar halts stolen SUV

DETROIT — When two Visalia, Calif., police officers swung their cruisers behind a sport utility vehicle that had been carjacked at gunpoint early Sunday, they prepared for a dangerous high-speed chase.

The 2009 Chevrolet Tahoe roared away with officers in pursuit, but shortly after the suspect made a right turn, operators at General Motors Co.'s OnStar service sent a command that electronically disabled the gas pedal and the SUV gradually came to a halt.

U.S. Spies Buy Stake in Firm That Monitors Blogs, Tweets

America’s spy agencies want to read your blog posts, keep track of your Twitter updates — even check out your book reviews on Amazon.

In-Q-Tel, the investment arm of the CIA and the wider intelligence community, is putting cash into Visible Technologies, a software firm that specializes in monitoring social media. It’s part of a larger movement within the spy services to get better at using ”open source intelligence” — information that’s publicly available, but often hidden in the flood of TV shows, newspaper articles, blog posts, online videos and radio reports generated every day.

Visible crawls over half a million web 2.0 sites a day, scraping more than a million posts and conversations taking place on blogs, online forums, Flickr, YouTube, Twitter and Amazon. (It doesn’t touch closed social networks, like Facebook, at the moment.) Customers get customized, real-time feeds of what’s being said on these sites, based on a series of keywords.

Not funny Lips sealed Cry Angry  The terrorists are winning.  The loss of free speech would be death knell for democracy.  But it is not the "government" that is doing this it is the government in response to "keep us safe".  It is the trade-off.  Unfortunately it eventually it may be used to go after the critics of the administration in office at the time.

Army Review Finds That Use of Troops in Alabama Town Broke the Law
Tuesday, October 20, 2009
By Staff, Associated Press

Samson, Ala. (AP) - An Army investigation found that soldiers should not have been sent to man traffic stops in a small Alabama town after 11 people were killed in March during a shooting spree.

An Army report released to The Associated Press on Monday in response to a Freedom of Information Act request said the decision to dispatch military police to Samson from nearby Fort Rucker broke the law. But an Army spokesman said no charges have been filed following the Aug. 10 report.

"As a result of the findings of the report, the Army took administrative action against at least one person," Lt. Col. Christopher Garver said.

The action was less than a transfer or discharge but Garver would not elaborate.

The report from the Department of Army Inspector General found the use of military personnel in Samson violated the Posse Comitatus Act, which prohibits federal troops from performing law enforcement actions. The names of those involved were redacted from the report.

The officer who made the decision to send the soldiers thought he had the authority based on his experience with responses to Hurricanes Katrina and Andrew, the report said.

Probe of Homeland Security privacy office sought

Group says chief is enabling, not curbing, surveillance

By Spencer S. Hsu
Washington Post Staff Writer
Tuesday, October 27, 2009

Privacy advocates have asked lawmakers to investigate the Department of Homeland Security office in charge of protecting Americans' privacy, saying it has shown "an extraordinary disregard" for its duty.

In a letter sent Friday to the House Homeland Security Committee, 21 organizations and seven people belonging to the Privacy Coalition say the department's chief privacy officer has seen its role as enabling, rather than curbing, government surveillance and intelligence programs.

TSA screening more than just carry-on bags
'Behavior detection' officers covertly watch travelers' conduct
Quote
To identify potentially dangerous individuals, the Transportation Security Administration has stationed specially trained behavior-detection officers at 161 U.S. airports. The officers may be positioned anywhere, from the parking garage to the gate, trying to spot passengers who show an unusual level of nervousness or stress.

They do not focus on nationality, race, ethnicity or gender, said TSA spokeswoman Sari Koshetz.

"We're not looking for a type of person, but at behaviors," she said.

Under the program, which started in Boston in 2003, a suspicious passenger might be given a secondary security screening or referred to police; detection officers do not have arrest powers.

Last year, officers nationwide required 98,805 passengers to undergo additional screenings. Police questioned 9,854 of them and arrested 813.

Airport rules changed after Ron Paul aide detained
Quote
An angry aide to Rep. Ron Paul, an iPhone and $4,700 in cash have forced the Transportation Security Administration to quietly issue two new rules telling its airport screeners they can only conduct searches related to airplane safety.

In response, the American Civil Liberties Union is dropping its lawsuit on behalf of Steve Bierfeldt, the man who was detained in March and who recorded the confrontation on his iPhone as TSA and local police officers spent half an hour demanding answers as to why he was carrying the money through Lambert-St. Louis International Airport.

The new rules, issuedin September and October, tell officers "screening may not be conducted to detect evidence of crimes unrelated to transportation security" and that large amounts of cash don't qualify as suspicious for purposes of safety.

"We had been hearing of so many reports of TSA screeners engaging in wide-ranging fishing expeditions for illegal activities," said Ben Wizner, a staff lawyer for the ACLU, pointing to reports of officers scanning pill-bottle labels to see whether the passenger was the person who obtained the prescription as one example.

He said screeners get a narrow exception to the Fourth Amendment, which prohibits unreasonable searches, strictly to keep weapons and explosives off planes, not to help police enforce other laws.

TSA was created in the wake of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks to boost screening at airports, but the young agency has repeatedly bumped heads against civil libertarians, who argue officers overstep their authority.
