Police shoot suspect who held 7 at gunpoint
by Nathan Gonzalez - Apr. 19, 2009 01:01 PM
The Arizona Republic

A 25-year-old man who police say held seven people hostage at gunpoint Saturday evening, remains hospitalized and in critical condition after being shot in the chest twice by a Phoenix officer who fired when the man pointed a gun at him.

Jesus Garcia-Perea faces numerous charges when released from the hospital, along with at least three others who were involved in a home-invasion robbery about 9:45 p.m. Saturday on the 4200 N. block of 35th Avenue, police spokesman Sgt. Andy Hill said in a statement.

Two men entered the residence and threatened seven people with a handgun then invited others into the apartment, according to police. The victims included two men, ages 32 and 22 years old; four women, ages 38, 34, 20, and 18 years old; and one 14-year-old girl.

"Those suspects summoned several additional suspects into the apartment," Hill said. "During the course of robbing the occupants, the victims stated one woman was sexually assaulted and a 14-year-old girl was sexually abused."

When officers arrived, the suspects - later identified as Garcia-Perea, Jonathan Escarrega-Castillo, Jesus Serreno-Montoya and possibly three others - fled the scene in different directions.

"The suspects split up and ran in different directions through the apartment complex, with several officers going into foot pursuit," Hill said.

An officer, who was only identified as 32 years old with nine years on the force, chased Garcia-Perea to a second-story balcony where the man pointed a gun at the officer. The officer then fired at least twice, hitting Garcia-Perea in the chest.

Garcia-Perea dropped his gun, but continued running until confronted by other officers who arrested him. Garcia-Perea was transported to a local hospital in critical condition.

Meanwhile, police arrested Escarrega-Carstillo, who was found with items taken from the apartment, Hill said.

Serreno-Montoya was apprehended while hiding in the backyard of a home in the 3400 block of West Glenrosa Street. He was arrested without further incident.

Both Escarrega-Castillo and Serreno-Montoya admitted to investigators to being in the U.S. illegally, but investigators are working to verify their immigration status with federal immigration authorities.

Police remain on the lookout for a fourth suspect seen running from the scene.

Police ask that witnesses contact investigators on the Phoenix Police Department's Violent Crimes Bureau desk at 602-262-6141.

GREEN VALLEY (AP) — A fire department official says four people were killed and 10 others seriously hurt when a van rolled over on an Arizona highway.

Green Valley Fire Department Capt. Melissa Smith says crews found the van early Saturday on Interstate 19 about 20 miles south of Tucson.

She says three people were dead at the scene and another died later at a hospital. Ten others were seriously injured and taken to a Tuscon hospital.

An Arizona Department of Public Safety statement says the victims are suspected of being illegal immigrants. The driver of the northbound minivan reportedly drifted into the highway median and lost control.

The highway was closed for several hours but has since reopened.

Father of the year?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

FRESNO, Calif. - Police in California are looking for a man accused of holding down his 7-year-old son while another man tattooed the child's belly with a street gang sign.

The boy's mother reported it to Fresno authorities on Tuesday.

Police say the father, 26-year-old Enrique Gonzalez, faces six charges including mayhem, child abuse, false imprisonment, battery, participating in a criminal street gang and committing a crime for the benefit of a gang.

Police have arrested a man they say was the tattoo artist. He faces similar charges.

The dog paw insignia represents the Bulldogs, Fresno's largest criminal street gang.
