Minn. lawmaker vows not to complete Census
Outspoken Republican Rep. Michele Bachmann says she's so worried that information from next year's national census will be abused that she will refuse to fill out anything more than the number of people in her household.
In an interview Wednesday morning with The Washington Times "America's Morning News," Mrs. Bachmann, Minnesota Republican, said the questions have become "very intricate, very personal" and she also fears ACORN, the community organizing group that came under fire for its voter registration efforts last year, will be part of the Census Bureau's door-to-door information collection efforts.
"I know for my family the only question we will be answering is how many people are in our home," she said. "We won't be answering any information beyond that, because the Constitution doesn't require any information beyond that."

That's giving more information than I intend to give. There are two purposes for the census, taxation and representation. Taxation is no longer based on population, unfortunately. We don't have much in the way of representation these days so I'm no too concerned about the government knowing how many people reside within my home. Better yet, I should inflate the number to match inflation of everything else these days.

Did everyone receive their census notice in the mail today letting them know to expect to receive their actual census sometime in the future?
Hey, at least that piece of worthless information created jobs; at least for the federal employees it did, including, but not limited to the U.S. Postal Workers who had to deliver a couple hundred million of these notices.
And of course there is the cost of printing and mailing these notices. I'm sure that stimulated the economy, right?
Quit giving BH Obama such a hard time.
These are not the droids you are looking for.

Some time I think that you all are so eager to criticize (the Govt. and all it does) that you don't take the time to think before you take to the keyboard. That letter if undeliverable (for any reason) is an indication of a wrong address or some other factor that needs to be taken into consideration. It is the same method that the Board of Election uses to verify registrations.

Good point -- I talked to my carrier. Every piece that they can't deliver must be endorsed showing why the piece was undeliverable.
The most common reason is because the house or apartment is vacant.

A postcard would accomplish the same thing and be a lot less expensive.
And why not suggest the real purpose and avoid (at least some of) the ridicule?
There is no restraint from this administration.
Tell your children they better get a job with the federal government. There sure is nothing available in the private sector.

From Counter "A postcard would accomplish the same thing and be a lot less expensive."
How do we know that? Do we know what the cost of the postcard stock (which is heavier than paper) is less than the cost and weight of the single page and envelope which were used? We don't know (at least the Shadow does not, maybe Counter does) if the costs (including the handling and the additional postage) are really different or is "lot less expensive" purely an ideological preconception?
"And why not suggest the real purpose and avoid (at least some of) the ridicule?"
This might have been a good idea but for some people ridicule of government activities is a knee jerk reaction.

Does the government enjoy the ignorance of America?
The Census Bureau's argument for completing the census: Ensure that your state gets it's share of federal money.
What happened to ensure that you are equally represented? The government wants us to be eager fill out a form so that we can play along with this legalized extortion.

The government is bankrupt.
Government pensions are in jeopardy.
Look at Greece. Look at California. See the future.
To what end will the State go to enforce its collective bargaining agreements with its government employee unions.
I won't cooperate.
Read Atlas Shrugged and tell me today's unemployment is not from the same result.
They have killed the goose. No more golden eggs.

This sort of "extortion" as you put it has a long history.
I was reading the records of Chester County, Pennsylvania this morning.
In 1677 the court ordered a census of the "Tyndable (i.e., taxable ) persons in the local population. The tax was 26 gilders/person payable in kind.
See page 77 of the Record of the Upland Court 1676-1681
http://books.google.com/books?id=j3oFAAAAQAAJ&printsec=frontcover&dq=the+record+of+the+court+at+upland&source=bl&ots=j1bUzTT4af&sig=xJ5NGzom2cXkScHkudYusw-Nccg&hl=en&ei=xfCcS-nqHIqQNtTpyeYN&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=1&ved=0CAYQ6AEwAA#v=onepage&q=&f=false
The sheriff Capt. Edmond Cantwell was instructed to use force to collect the tax. He was paid 5s for each pound collected.
Seems like your view would be that we lost our freedom 100 years before we got it.

Too bad we can't edit our posts anymore.
I should have added this.
Please give me another negative vote for contradicting the popular views around here.

India kick starts challenging population census
Quote
India has launched a census that would cover around 1.2 billion residents, to create a comprehensive identity record in the south Asian nation.
The counting will involve collecting photographs and fingerprints from every person over the age of 15 to create a biometric national database used to issue a new National Population Register.

Mom Recognizes Census Worker as Sex Offender
"I figured this is a government worker, I'm safe," Schmalbach, 33, told the Inquirer. She had given him names and birthdates of her family to the man who called himself “Jamie.”

Inspector General’s Memo: Census Says It Hired More Workers Than It Needed As a ‘Cost-Saving Measure’
By Terence P. Jeffrey,
(CNSNews.com) - The U.S. Census purposefully hired more workers than it needed, telling the Office of the Inspector General of the Commerce Department that it did so as a “cost-saving measure,” according to a memorandum that Todd J. Zinser of the inspector general’s office sent to Census Bureau Director Robert Groves last week.
“According to Census,” said Zinser’s May 26 memo to Groves, “‘frontloading’ its workforce (i.e. hiring and training more enumerators than necessary to offset turnover) is a cost-saving measure.” The inspector general’s memo, however, suggested that in at least one Census Bureau operation excessive staff had increased the “cost of operations” and that in another operation deployment of an unnecessarily large number of workers "increased the operation’s direct labor and travel costs."
