An 8-year-old boy was taken to a local hospital in critical condition Sunday afternoon after he was reportedly shot in the face with a handgun.
The child remained in critical condition Monday, police said.
The boy was in the living room of a home near Seventh Street and Indian School Road at around 1:45 p.m., said Sgt. Andy Hill, a spokesman for the Phoenix Police Department.
He was with three other children, ages 4 and 6, when he got hold of a handgun. The gun was somehow fired and the shot hit him in the face, Hill said.
The boy's aunt and uncle found him and called 911. They originally called, reporting a person who got injured falling down the stairs. When Phoenix firefighters responded they learned what had actually happened and notified Phoenix police, Hill said.
Officers tried to find the handgun. Authorities believe the uncle, 24-year-old
Javier Gudino Cruz, threw it outside to hide it, Hill said.
The handgun was eventually found and officers learned that Cruz was not lawfully allowed to have a gun.
Cruz was arrested and booked on suspicion of being in possession of a handgun, child abuse due to neglect involving the gun, and reportedly firing the handgun earlier in the day while he was drinking alcohol, Hill said.
No other information was released regarding the boy
