Mary Joe Kopechne was found by a police diver in a state of rigor mortis clutching the back seat of the car with her hands with her head stuck upward in the rear foot-well of the vehicle. There was still a substantial air bubble inside the car, where the rear footwells and back seat are located. That indicates that she survived for some time after the car became submerged...
Not only did Kennedy fail to summon help immediately but neither did the two attorneys.
