In the final days of the gubernatorial campaign, a new poll shows Bob McDonnell with an 18 point margin over his Democratic opponent Creigh Deeds, according to a statewide survey conducted by Virginia Commonwealth University.

Keep repeating to yourself the only poll that counts is election day.

Election 2009: Virginia Governor Election
Virginia Governor: McDonnell Stretches Lead To 13
- Rasmussen

Quote
Republican Robert F. McDonnell has now opened a 13-point lead over Democrat R. Creigh Deeds with less than a week to go in the race for governor of Virginia.

Quote
The Deeds campaign and the White House have gone back-and-forth over whether the president should make a campaign appearance in the state. The initial reaction from Virginia voters to the president's campaign stop with Deeds late yesterday in Norfolk isn't reassuring: 39% say Obama campaigning for Deeds in Virginia makes them less likely to vote for the Democratic candidate. Just 24% say it makes them more likely to vote for Deeds, and 36% say it has no impact on their voting decision.

Obama is throwing Deeds under the bus already.  Obama was at a pathetic rally for Deeds in Norfolk at ODU (Old Dominion University).  The only people that showed up were student drones.

Not Dead Yet - Rich Lowry

Quote
Yet, in Virginia this year, this death notice has been shown to be both dated and premature. It foolishly extrapolates from political conditions a year ago that have already drastically changed, and assumes that Republican candidates will never adjust to new circumstances. Republican gubernatorial candidate Bob McDonnell has run a model campaign for the Obama era, energizing the Right and winning the center in a tour de force directly on Pres. Barack Obama’s doorstep.

The Washington Post Loses in Virginia

Quote
Bob McDonnell won big tonight in the Virginia gubernatorial race, as did the entire Virginia Republican party. The implications of the race will be sorted out soon enough. But one big loser is the Washington Post which may unwittingly have helped the Republican, despite their best efforts to put his opponent over the top.

On the last weekend in August the Post ran the first of dozens of stories about McDonnell's 1989 masters' thesis, in which he wrote, among other things, that working women were detrimental to families and that government should favor traditional marriage over gay unions. While they didn't know the exact target, the McDonnell camp was expecting, as one top adviser put it, a "hatchet job" from the Post. A top campaign strategist says, "We always knew we'd have to fend off some attack from the Post, probably on a social issue. But in all candor we didn't expect the thesis. It was a 20 year old paper."

The Washington Bleep Loses.

The Democrats were pounded all over.  McDonnell won Fairfax, Prince William and Loudon Counties which are all Northern Virginia.  Prince William and Loudon were won Handily.  The House of Delegates will net +6 for the GOP

New Jersey was icing.

I was working a traditional "Blue" precinct near Dulles Airport.  We literally had people running up to our table volunteering for the GOP.

I am not going to say the GOP does not have problems on the national level (Calling Ken Blackwell), but there are local patches that are good.  My county chairman decided to fight every delegate race in Fairfax.  He lost some but just coming to the table put McDonnell over the top in Fairfax.

I urge you CTH'ers to get involved there in Franklin County.  Overwhelm the establishment.
