Doug Hoffman endorsed by Club for Growth

This is a special election for a congressional vacancy.  For reasons best known to the Almighty, the local GOP endorsed Dede Scozzafava who has ACORN ties and is very liberal.  Even more baffling is the National GOP supporting her.

There's a quirky thing in NY political organizations.  A candidate can run on several "lines" or parties.  The Conservative party of New York generally endorses the GOP candidates but this time they didn't.

A recent poll puts this as a dead heat. 45% undecided.  Which tells me turnout and organization will be everything.

Losing It Over Scozzafava - American Spectator.

Quote
Scozzafava's candidacy is getting so much attention because a conservative Republican, Doug Hoffman, is now challenging her, running as the New York Conservative Party candidate in the race. Hoffman was rejected by the Republican Party of New York, which chose not to contact Conservative Party leader Michael Long for input on the pick. Such input is usually sought, to ensure that the Republican candidate will also be able to run on the Conservative Party line on the ballot.

Hoffman has already been endorsed by the Club for Growth, Gary Bauer, and former Sen. Fred Thompson. According to sources in Washington, a number of conservatives have been pressuring former House Speaker Newt Gingrich to step up and support Hoffman, both financially and with an appearance, but that Gingrich has thus far rejected those requests without an explanation. David Keene, head of the American Conservative Union was said to be calling around to various conservative organizations, encouraging them to support Hoffman and not support the NRCC in further efforts.

In New York, meanwhile, aides close to Hoffman said they were poised to make several announcements in the coming days that "will change the dynamics of the race," according to one aide. "We have conservatives across the country who really believe we can win this with the right team in place and the right kind of support, and we believe that it's all coming together."

I use the Club for Growth as a donation aggregator because I trust them to support fiscal conservatives who have a chance to win. When they endorsed Doug Hoffman, I decided to ask them point blank if he could win the race as a third party candidate and for the polling data that demonstrates this. This was their response:

Yes he does have a chance to win.  Our PAC does not endorse unless we believe the race is winnable.  Our belief is that his chances of winning are as good as the other two candidates.  If all three had the same chance, that would be a one-in-three.

Here is a link to the poll released by the Club for Growth Sept. 24.

http://www.clubforgrowth.org/2009/09/cfg_poll_shows_statistical_tie.php

There was a poll by a college with methodology that was not fully disclosed (it did not show the questions they used to screen likely voters and thus in our opinion may not be assessing properly who is a likely voter) and that pollster said “This is a wide open race.”

http://www.siena.edu/uploadedfiles/home/Parents_and_Community/Community_Page/SRI/SNY_Poll/SNY0909%20CD23.pdf

A huge portion of the Republican’s “vote” in the Sienna poll is highly uncertain of their choice.  When they learn more about her record, her support will likely drop fairly dramatically.

The NRCC really was asleep at the switch on this one.  There was another special election in NY where they were asleep.   It was Gillibrand's district.

New York Republicans Put Up ACORN Backed Candidate in NY-23

Hat tip RedState.

Quote

We have broken down in detail how ACORN has its own political party called the Working Families Party in New York. When a candidate appears as a Working Families Party candidate in New York, it is a signal that this is the candidate ACORN is putting up.

In New York’s 23rd Congressional District, the Republican Party rushed to nominate Dede Scozzafava as the replacement for Congressman McHugh, now in the Obama administration. It turns out that Scozzafava is also an ACORN backed candidate having received the Working Families Party endorsement on numerous occasions.

The great news in this district is that the Conservative Party candidate, Mr. Hoffman, is within striking distance of beating Scozzafava. We need to make sure Scozzafava is destroyed at the polls. It would be bad news to have an ACORN backed candidate infiltrating the GOP in Congress.

Dede Scozzafava is Toast. But We Need $25,000.00 ASAP

From Eric at RedState.  The handling of this is bizarre.

Quote
# The NRCC is up on YouTube attacking Hoffman to keep DeDe from coming in 3rd. Yes, the NRCC is attacking a conservative for them to save face in a seat that they will definitely lose.
# The GOP won’t attack the Democrat because the Democrat and Scozzafava are running on an identical platform. It makes no sense for them to attack Owens on issues Scozzafava supports. NOTE: The NRCC tells me they are running ads on television attacking Owens.
# The NRCC’s money spent attacking Hoffman could be spent in real contested elections in the fall.

Actually I think Steele is not thrilled about what NRCC and local GOP did by putting up Scozzafava.  I wouldn't give her a nickel either.  Go Doug!

Rino On The Run

Quote
Doug Hoffman says his campaign in upstate New York's 23rd District is "squeezing" liberal Republican Dede Scozzafava in a three-way special election.
"There's only 20 days left . . . but we have her on the run," Hoffman told reporters, bloggers and conservative activists in a conference call Wednesday afternoon. . . .
"As a third-party candidate, I can win this race," Hoffman said, emphasizing that, with less than three weeks left until the election to succeed Rep. John McHugh in the 11-county district, fund-raising is essential. "We need to raise money to get the message out." . . .

Dick Armey to endorse 3rd party candidate over Republican in NY House race

Quote
Add North Texas' Dick Armey to the list of conservative stars backing Hoffman. The former House Majority Leader has confirmed to the Hoffman campaign that he'll spend Thursday with them, said Rob Ryan, a Hoffman spokesman. "He is with us almost all day Thursday," Ryan told me. "There will be a bunch of different events." Armey's endorsement of Hoffman is personal and wasn't offered on behalf of FreedomWorks, the conservative foundation he chairs.

It's Up to You, Upstate New York

Quote
Rob Ryan's hoarse voice rumbled with laughter Tuesday afternoon as he reacted to reports that liberal Republican Dede Scozzafava had  called police on a reporter who asked too many questions after her Monday speech.

"The only thing the police need to investigate in this race is if Dede Scozzafava is impersonating a Republican," Ryan said in a telephone interview yesterday.

Yet the media coordinator for New York congressional candidate Doug Hoffman was less jocular when discussing the Conservative Party campaign's most pressing need in the crucial 23rd District special election. "We need money and we need it now," he said. Fundraising has been "picking up every day," Ryan said, and the Hoffman campaign is "getting donations from across the country."

However, Hoffman is battling against major party candidates, with the national GOP spending hundreds of thousands of dollars for Scozzafava -- angering conservatives like Michelle Malkin -- while the Democratic Party pours cash into the campaign coffers of its candidate, Bill Owens.

Breaking: Palin Supports Hoffman

Quote
Doug Hoffman stands for the principles that all Republicans should share: smaller government, lower taxes, strong national defense, and a commitment to individual liberty.

Political parties must stand for something. When Republicans were in the wilderness in the late 1970s, Ronald Reagan knew that the doctrine of "blurring the lines" between parties was not an appropriate way to win elections. Unfortunately, the Republican Party today has decided to choose a candidate that more than blurs the lines, and there is no real difference between the Democrat and the Republican in this race. This is why Doug Hoffman is running on the Conservative Party's ticket.

Republicans and conservatives around the country are sending an important message to the Republican establishment in their outstanding grassroots support for Doug Hoffman: no more politics as usual.

You can help Doug by visiting his official website below and joining me in supporting his campaign:

Quote
Gov. Tim Pawlenty of Minnesota is now adding to the momentum becoming the first sitting Republican Governor to endorse Hoffman. This comes on the heels of Sarah Palin’s endorsement from last week.
