Mark,
I know PPP is a dem polling outfit, but this would be, to be understated, difficult to poll.  I am not sure if it captures what happened yesterday with Scozzafava pulling out.

Another unbelievable thing is that Scozzafava is the second ranking Republican in the New York state assembly.

She goes beyond being merely a garden variety RINO.  No wonder the NY State GOP is so pathetic.  She is reminiscent of Kim Philby's Cambridge 5 spy ring.

There have been 3 polls since the pullout. The latest has Hoffman up by 6.

The trick is to find Republican candidates that match their districts. The reason for the anger in NY-23 is that there was no reason to nominate a liberal in a conservative leaning district. In some districts, moderates represent the GOP's best chance of winning the seat. The Democrats have mastered this, hence the tremendous number of blue dog democrats that represent what would otherwise be Republican districts.

I have to admit this is a dissappointment.

My take on it.

1) To win, Owens had to come out AGAINST the public option.

2) The National GOP is pathetic.  Fortunately, we were organized well enough in Virginia, we didn't really need them.  Spending money on Scozzafava was criminal.  The RNC and NRCC need to do some soul searching and becoming moderate is not the option they should choose.

3) Hoffman was an unknown accountant who didn't even live in the district (although he lives near by and grew up there). He acted.  I have to give the man credit.  He was at single digits a month ago.  I hope more citizens like Doug Hoffman stand up.

4) People must get involved on the local level.  If party bosses don't listen to the grassroots, make their lives miserable.

Recanvassing shows NY-23 race tightens even as Rep. Bill Owens is sworn into House seat

Quote
Democrat Bill Owens delivers his victory speech at his headquarters in Plattsburgh last week. Owens declared victory after Conservative nominee Doug Hoffman conceded the 23rd Congressional District race election night. Now recanvassing shows the special election has narrowed to a 3,000-vote difference, and will be decided by a count of absentee ballots.» Updated county-by-county NY-23 vote totals (PDF)Washington -- Conservative Doug Hoffman conceded the race in the 23rd Congressional District last week after receiving two pieces of grim news for his campaign: He was down 5,335 votes with 93 percent of the vote counted on election night, and he had barely won his stronghold in Oswego County.

Apparently Owens was sworn in without an election certification?    What if Hoffman actually won/wins?
