So, Putin's intent to reconstruct the old USSR is finally clear. My God, what does he think he will use for money? Russia's forces couldn't fight their way out of a wet paper bag at this point. With so many problems, and he wants to jump-start a new Cold War. What a dumbass....

50% Good News Is the Bad News in Russian Radio
By ANDREW E. KRAMER
MOSCOW, April 21 — At their first meeting with journalists since taking over Russia’s largest independent radio news network, the managers had startling news of their own: from now on, they said, at least 50 percent of the reports about Russia must be “positive.”
In addition, opposition leaders could not be mentioned on the air and the United States was to be portrayed as an enemy, journalists employed by the network, Russian News Service, say they were told by the new managers, who are allies of the Kremlin.
How would they know what constituted positive news?
“When we talk of death, violence or poverty, for example, this is not positive,” said one editor at the station who did not want to be identified for fear of retribution. “If the stock market is up, that is positive. The weather can also be positive.”
In a darkening media landscape, radio news had been a rare bright spot. Now, the implementation of the “50 percent positive” rule at the Russian News Service leaves an increasingly small number of news outlets that are not managed by the Kremlin, directly or through the state national gas company, Gazprom, a major owner of media assets.
The three national television networks are already state controlled, though small-circulation newspapers generally remain independent.

Russia drops 'dad of all bombs'
Environmentally friendly weapon four times bigger than U.S. non-nuclears
VLADIMIR ISACHENKOV
The Associated Press
The Russian military has successfully tested what it described as the world's most powerful non-nuclear air-delivered bomb, Russia's state television reported yesterday.
It was the latest show of Russia's military muscle amid chilly relations with the United States.

OMG - Environmentally friendly.

Putin: Russia could aim nukes at Ukraine
MOSCOW (AP) — Russia could aim nuclear weapons at Ukraine if the former Soviet republic joins NATO and accepts the deployment of anti-missile defenses on its territory, President Vladimir Putin said Tuesday.
Putin spoke at a news conference in Moscow after four hours of talks with Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko, who has said joining the Western alliance is a priority for his country.
"That of course is Ukraine's internal process ... and we don't have the right, and we won't, interfere in this process," Putin said. But, he added, "that raises the question for Russia of the need for retaliatory actions."
"It's frightening not just to talk about, but even to think about, that in response to such deployment, the possibility of such deployments — and one can't theoretically exclude these deployments — that Russia will have to point its warheads at Ukrainian territory," he said.
The warning was Putin's strongest to date about Kiev's efforts to join the Western alliance.

Nuclear missiles parade across Red Square
Nuclear missiles and tanks paraded Friday across Red Square for the first time since the Soviet era but new President Dmitry Medvedev warned other nations against "irresponsible ambitions" that he said could start wars.
Marching bands and 8,000 troops goose-stepped across the square, followed by a huge display of heavy weapons including Topol-M ballistic missiles and T-90 tanks, and a fly-by of warplanes.
Reviewing his first parade as commander in chief, Medvedev warned against "irresponsible ambitions" that he said could spark war across entire continents.
In an apparent attack on US foreign policy and Western backing for Kosovo's independence, Medvedev also criticised "intentions to intrude in the affairs of other states and especially redraw borders."
Alongside the new president was his mentor and now prime minister, Vladimir Putin, standing under bright sunshine in a tribune in front of Lenin's Mausoleum, the Soviet holy of holies that was screened off by a giant hoarding inscribed with May 9, 1945

O.K. what do we do now?
The Shadow has often commented on the danger that Chavez poses. This is a much greater and more dangerous provocation than Georgia. We need to drive the price of oil/natural gas down to the point that neither Chavez nor Putin can afford to do all the things they are doing. Drilling for oil will not solve it because of the time lag. Drilling for gas on land is probably easier to get but then things would have to be converted to gas. Solar and wind can also be implemented faster.

Russia has signed weapons contracts worth more than $4 billion with Venezuela since 2005 to supply fighter jets, helicopters, and 100,000 Kalashnikov assault rifles. Chavez's government is in talks to buy Russian submarines, air defense systems and armored vehicles and more Sukhoi fighter jets.

hmmm, this is interesting.
Lets assume each of the following:
1) McCain is in charge
2) Obama is in charge
3) McCain has cardiac arrest, Palin is in charge
4) The KKK wins, Biden is in charge
Now, let's examine the outcomes
1) Russia and the US go back to a cold war, this time with no proxy wars
2) USA and Russia talk, nothing happens and the Cold War is back (or Russia stabs us in the back)
3) Russia gets bombed, USA gets bombed, we all die (
best for us all
)
4) See McCain

Talking to two bit thugs gets you nowhere - they only understand strength. McCain said it right when he said (paraphrasing) Mr. Bush looked into his eyes and saw a friend – I looked into his eyes and saw three letters “KGB”

Let me get this straight...Russia condemns terrorists yet trades with them or supplies them on a daily basis. Sorry Russia, if you want to be taken seriously, the "sewer scraping" needs to start with Putin himself..
Putin orders Moscow bombers "scraped from sewers"
Reuters
TIMELINE - Female suicide bombers Reuters – Flowers, left in memory of victims of a bomb explosion, are seen at Lubyanka metro station in Moscow …
By Darya Korsunskaya Darya Korsunskaya – Tue Mar 30, 11:09 am ET
MOSCOW (Reuters) – Prime Minister Vladimir Putin Tuesday said the culprits behind twin suicide bombings that killed 39 people in Moscow's metro must be scraped "from the bottom of the sewers" and exposed.
The tough talk came a day after the deadliest attack on the Russian capital in six years fueled fears of a broader offensive by rebels based in the North Caucasus and underscored the Kremlin's failure to keep militants in check.
