Let’s not pretend shock over prisoners’ torture
Friday, May 14, 2004

I am amazed at the shock and dismay displayed by our government and military leaders regarding the reports of American soldiers torturing prisoners in Iraq. Are our leaders naive? Or is it more likely that they are lying when they profess ignorance? After all, for years our infamous "School of the Americas" has been teaching the soldiers of Latin America how to torture and kill. Do we not teach what we know and practice?

Some of the worst abusers of human rights in South America are products of the school. This is not surprising when we recall that in 1992 the Pentagon was forced to make public the school’s training program, which advocated torture and instructed soldiers in techniques of extortion and execution, as well. In an attempt to deflect the indignant criticism of citizens, the Pentagon changed its name in 2001 to the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation. According to the late Sen. Paul Coverdell, a supporter of the school, the change was "cosmetic" and would ensure that the school could continue its "mission."

So now we are surprised that American soldiers are torturing and humiliating prisoners?

I find her comments to be utterly fascinating.  She is so deeply concerned about the US military, yet she is completely oblivious to the actions of any other "military" on the planet.  In fact, why the concern with military at all?  How many millions of people have suffered and died as the result of policies of the Catholic Church over the ages?  Certainly no hint of remorse there.  Or, more recently, how many of our youngsters have been raped and psychologically tortured by Catholic priests?  Hundreds, thousands?  Who would you rather put in charge of a prison full of Islamic terrorists; priests or US soldiers?  They would be a lot safer under soldiers…by far.

I disagree!  The Iraqis in those prisons are nearly adults or adults, and much too old to be of interest to those fellows.

Good point, JohnO!  Tongue

I think this reinforces the difference between Protestantism and Catholicism.  Prots don't allow this "retreat from the world" which, today at least, allows some people to hide their radical ideas (and their sexuality!) behind JC.  These Liberation Theologists (most of whom are Catholic) never have to practice Christianity in the real world -- no compromises to their pacifism and Franciscan vows of egalitarian poverty!

In my view, the major message of Jesus was "to come out of the ape," meaning that we need to transcend our animal natures.  Fair enough...but in living with other apes occasionally you must ape-out to make the greater point (as Jesus did in the Temple).  Sometimes apes only understand other apes, and you are forced to descend to their level to promote improvements over time...like the war on terror.

In short, I don't think "turning the other check" means suicide...I think it means disciplined restraint.  When you run out of cheeks to slap, then...well...

I hope you aren't upset by this Mr. Blair, but I tracked the Nun down and sent her an email containing your message, although I didn't attribute it to you. I'm just curious about what he response would be.

Turns out that this woman is a member of Central Ohioans for Peace. Remember that crazy bunch? The Anti-war protest on March 20? With the palestinian speaker that said "we must push the jew zion-nazists into the sea."  Yeah, that same bunch. Interesting place for a nun to hang out.

And Dain, Jesus said "to come out of the ape?" I must have missed that in my Bible reading.

Peter...you missed that phrase?  You must have one of those new-fangled bibles.

In all seriousness, I simply meant that most of JC's teachings sort of go against the grain -- love your enemy, don't worry about tomorrow, treat others as you'd want to be treated, and so on.  In essence, he was saying "You know all those drives and instincts that got you this far?  Well...forget about them.  Become something more than just another animal."
