Let’s not pretend shock over prisoners’ torture
Friday, May 14, 2004
I am amazed at the shock and dismay displayed by our government and military leaders regarding the reports of American soldiers torturing prisoners in Iraq. Are our leaders naive? Or is it more likely that they are lying when they profess ignorance? After all, for years our infamous "School of the Americas" has been teaching the soldiers of Latin America how to torture and kill. Do we not teach what we know and practice?
Some of the worst abusers of human rights in South America are products of the school. This is not surprising when we recall that in 1992 the Pentagon was forced to make public the school’s training program, which advocated torture and instructed soldiers in techniques of extortion and execution, as well. In an attempt to deflect the indignant criticism of citizens, the Pentagon changed its name in 2001 to the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation. According to the late Sen. Paul Coverdell, a supporter of the school, the change was "cosmetic" and would ensure that the school could continue its "mission."
So now we are surprised that American soldiers are torturing and humiliating prisoners?

I find her comments to be utterly fascinating. She is so deeply concerned about the US military, yet she is completely oblivious to the actions of any other "military" on the planet. In fact, why the concern with military at all? How many millions of people have suffered and died as the result of policies of the Catholic Church over the ages? Certainly no hint of remorse there. Or, more recently, how many of our youngsters have been raped and psychologically tortured by Catholic priests? Hundreds, thousands? Who would you rather put in charge of a prison full of Islamic terrorists; priests or US soldiers? They would be a lot safer under soldiers…by far.
