BARTLETT TO LECTURE ON FOSSIL FUEL DEPENDENCY
-- Albert Bartlett, professor emeritus of physics from the University of Colorado, will present "Arithmetic, Population and Energy," a talk about our dependency on fossil fuels, from 2-3 p.m. today (6/14) in 170 East Annex, 209 W. 18th Ave. The talk identifies the exponential function, which describes steady growth, and then shows how steady growth gives enormous numbers in modest periods of time. Bartlett presents the dramatic reduction of the life expectancy of a finite nonrenewable resource such as petroleum, when the rate of consumption of the resource is growing steadily. The talk closes with a discussion of the importance of educating everyone to the arithmetic and consequences of growth, especially in terms of population and the earth's finite resources.
